HOSTETLER, JONES, MASIAREK CHOSEN
FOR LSC SOUTH ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

PORTALES, NM — Three Eastern New Mexico University baseball players have been named to the 2000 Lone Star Conference South Division All-Academic Team. ENMU’s selections were sophomore center fielder Andy Hostetler (Albuquerque, NM/Valley H.S.), junior shortstop David Jones (Sierra Vista, AZ/Eastern Arizona College) and senior designated hitter Matt Masiarek (Brisbane, Australia/Lamar C.C.).

Student-athletes with at least a 3.2 grade point average and 24 or more semester hours at an LSC member institution were eligible for the LSC Academic All-Conference Team. A total of 14 players from the six South Division teams were selected.

Hostetler, a Business Administration major with a 3.647 cumulative grade point average, hit .391 to lead the Greyhounds this spring. He also recorded team highs with 68 hits, 174 at bats, 14 doubles and 14 stolen bases. He hit 5 triples and 2 home runs, giving his 21 extra-base hits during the season. He crossed the plate 39 times and provided 35 RBIs. He finished the year with a .563 slugging percentage and was 14 of 19 (.737) on stolen base attempts.

In two seasons at ENMU, Hostetler owns a .349 career batting average and 20 career stolen bases. This year, he started all 47 games and was a First Team All-LSC South selection.

Jones has a 3.203 cumulative GPA and is majoring in Biology. He led the entire LSC with 7 triples this season and topped the Greyhounds with 49 runs scored. He started all 47 games, and earned a .306 batting average and a .538 hitting percentage. He pounded out 11 doubles, 7 triples and 5 home runs to lead ENMU with 23 extra-base hits.

He also received a team-high 20 walks during the season. Jones tied for second on the team with 53 hits and tied for third with 33 RBIs. He was named Second Team All-LSC South at the utility position.

Masiarek is majoring in Biology and owns a 3.354 cumulative GPA. He was named Second Team All-LSC South at designated hitter after earning a .369 batting average and hitting a team-high 10 home runs. He tied for fourth in the LSC with .24 home runs per game. He led the Greyhounds with 41 RBIs, a .646 slugging percentage and a .458 on-base percentage. His 10 homers were just two short of the ENMU record set by Steve Marquez in 1995 and 1996.

Masiarek also hit 4 doubles and 1 triple while playing in 42 games this season. During two seasons at ENMU, Masiarek achieved a .332 career batting average. He totaled 76 hits, scored 58 runs, pounded 15 homers and recorded 64 RBIs.

ENMU finished the 2000 season with a 25-21-1 overall record. The Greyhounds earned third place in the LSC South with a 10-8 record. ENMU was in the battle for the South Division title and an LSC Tournament berth until the final game of the season.
