NEW MEXICO STATE DEFEATS ENMU IN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL EXHIBITION
LAS CRUCES, NM — New Mexico State University defeated visiting Eastern New Mexico University, 81-48, in a women’s basketball exhibition game, at the Pan American Center, Nov. 9, in Las Cruces, N.M. The game was the Zias’ first action against an outside opponent this fall.

NMSU was led by Sinnamonn Garrett with 18 points. Ivana Stojkovic grabbed a game- high 13 rebounds and scored 12 points for the Aggies. Lauren O’Neill chipped in 14 points, Mari Sanchez added 13 points and Jenia Dimitrova contributed 11 points. O’Neill and Dimitrova also provided a game-high 5 assists each.

The Zias’ top scorer was Jody Avent (Sr., G, Stinnett, TX/South Plains College), with 19 points on 6 of 14 field goals and 6 of 8 at the line. Lenni Hartley (Sr., G, Roy, NM/ Roy H.S.) hit for 7 points and also grabbed 5 rebounds. Katheryne Hickman (Sr., F, San Antonio, TX/Castle Hills Baptist H.S.) hauled down a team-high 7 rebounds, scored 4 points and earned 2 steals.

NMSU held a 37-23 lead at halftime. ENMU pulled to within 9 points, 45-36, on a field goal by Tricia Doherty (Fr., F, Plano, TX/East H.S.) with 9:57 remaining in the game. The Aggies then went on a 7-0 run to increase their lead to 16 points. ENMU never got closer the rest of the way.

Eastern New Mexico will open the regular season Nov. 17-18 at the Oklahoma Panhandle State Classic in Goodwell, Okla. The Zias’ first game will be against Colorado School of Mines on Nov. 17 at 1:00 p.m. (MST). ENMU will conclude the event by playing Western New Mexico on Nov. 18 at 1:00 p.m. (MST). Eastern’s home opener is set for Nov. 29, when the Zias will take on Adams State at 7:00 p.m. (MST).
