GARETT WILLIAMS NAMED TO VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAM
PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University linebacker Garett Williams (Sr., 6’1”, 205 lbs., Monahans, TX/Monahans H.S.) has been named to the Verizon Academic All- District VI College Division Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Williams and 23 other players named Academic All-District VI are eligible for the Academic All-America College Division Team which will be announced next month.

Williams has earned a 3.74 cumulative grade point averaging while majoring in Biology at ENMU. He was a Second Team Academic All-District selection in 1999, and has been included on the ENMU Athletic Honor Roll all 6 semesters. He was named to the LSC South All-Academic Team in 1999, and qualified for the LSC Academic Honor Roll in 1998 and 1999. This year’s LSC academic awards have not yet been awarded.

Williams finished the 2000 season as the Greyhound’s third-leading tackler. He recorded 32 unassisted tackles and 32 assists for 64 total tackles. He also earned 6 tackles for 12 yards in losses, forced 2 fumbles and recovered 2 fumbles. He completed his ENMU career with 169 career total tackles, including 17 tackles for losses. Williams started every game during the last three seasons, while playing in 44 games overall at ENMU. He was a team co-captain in both 1999 and 2000.

CoSIDA District VI includes colleges and universities in New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas. Players nominated for the Verizon Academic All-District Team were starters or key reserves with cumulative GPAs of 3.2 or higher (4.0 scale). Each player had to be at his current college or university for at least one full year.

The College Division includes players in NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and the NAIA. The Greyhounds, led by Head Coach Harold “Bud” Elliott (7th year), compete in NCAA Division II and the Lone Star Conference. Eastern finished the 2000 season last weekend with a 6-4 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the LSC South. ENMU has clinched a tie for the LSC South title for the second year in a row.
