WEST TEXAS A&M EARNS LSC SEMIFINAL VICTORY OVER EASTERN NEW MEXICO
Zias End Season With 26-11 Record
LAWTON, OK — West Texas A&M University, ranked #3 in NCAA Division II, defeated Eastern New Mexico University, 15-3, 15-6, 16-14, in a Lone Star Conference Tournament semifinal match, Friday, Nov. 10 in Lawton, Okla. WTAMU, now 32-1 on the season, recorded a .264 hitting percentage during the match. ENMU, which hit .142, ended the season with a 26-11 overall record.

West Texas A&M advanced into the LSC Championship match, set for 6:00 p.m. (MST) on Saturday, Nov. 11. The Lady Buffs will take on the winner of Friday’s second semifinal match between host Cameron University and Abilene Christian University.

Against ENMU, the Lady Buffs easily won the first two games, but barely edged the Zias in the third game. Shannon Stroud led WTAMU with 22 kills and 11 digs, to go with a .450 hitting percentage. Jennifer Catano contributed 10 kills, while Jess Anne Fernandes added 8 kills. Setter Kendra Morgan provided 48 assists.

The Zias were led by sophomore middle blocker Christabell Mariner (Pago Pago, Amer. Samoa), who recorded 14 kills, 7 digs and 5 total blocks. Mariner increased her ENMU record for kills in one season to 567. The previous record of 505 kills was set by Jennifer Goble Poyer in 1992.

ENMU also received 7 kills from junior right-side hitter Jenny Gledhill (West Jordan, UT/Sheridan J.C.), 6 kills from senior outside hitter Tanya Heyko (Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.) and 5 kills from junior outside hitter Jessica Rowley (Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.)

Heyko ended the season with 473 kills, the 4th highest total in ENMU volleyball history. She also achieved 566 digs during the season to rank 3rd on the Zias’ single season list.

Margie Goble (Fr., Setter, San Antonio, TX/Holmes H.S.) provided 30 assists and a team-high 8 digs. Goble concluded the year with 1,536 assists, establishing a new ENMU record. The previous record for assists in one season was 1,498 by Lindsey Davison last year.

ENMU Head Coach Mike Maguire has led the Zias to a combined record of 75-31 (.708) and three trips to the LSC semifinals over the past three seasons. Maguire has a career record of 310-188 (.622), including 295-173 (.630) in 14 seasons at ENMU.
