ADAMS STATE SLIPS PAST ZIAS IN FIRST GAME OF HOME-AND-HOME SERIES
PORTALES, NM — Adams State College scored the final six points against Eastern New Mexico University on Wednesday, Nov. 29, turning a one-point lead into a 66-59 victory at Greyhound Arena.

The game began a home-and-home series that continues on Friday, Dec. 1 in Alamosa, Colo. ASC improved to 3-0 with the win, while ENMU dropped to 1-3. The game was close throughout, with Adams State leading 31-28 at halftime. Eastern led by four points, 41-37, with 15:38 left in the game, but Adams State was in front, 48-45, with 10:02 remaining.

ENMU and ASC were tied, 53-53, with 6:05 left, after Brandi Bates (Sr., G/F, Plainview, TX/Plainview H.S.) of ENMU hit both ends of a two-shot foul. The Grizzlies scored the next five points for a 58-53 advantage with 4:48 to go.

The Zias pulled within a single point, 69-59, with 1:26 remaining, when Katheryne Hickman (Sr., F, San Antonio, TX/Castle Hills Baptist H.S.) made two free throws. ENMU missed its final five shots, including four 3-pointers. ASC clinched the win by sinking 4 of 6 free throws and receiving a two-point basket by Sarah Poole during the final 1:19.

Four Grizzlies scored in double figures, led by Amy Ziegler and Shannon Meece, with 14 points each. Carrie Miller produced 12 points, and Poll added 10 points. Tara Morrison grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for ASC.

Eastern’s top scorer was Hickman, with 14 points. Hickman also led the Zias with 8 boards. Bates contributed 8 points and 5 rebounds, while Breanne Baker (Sr., F/P, Sudan, TX/Sudan H.S.) and Jody Avent (Sr., G, Stinnett, TX/South Plains College) each scored 6 points. Senior guard Jennifer Dvorak scored 5 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and recorded 4 assists in 14 minutes played. Sharon Max (Sr., G/F, Fruitland, NM/Kirtland Central H.S.) led all Zias with 14 assists to go with 5 points.

Adams State shot 42.2% for the game and 40.0% in the second half. ENMU converted just 36.7% of its shots, including 32.3% (10 of 31) in the second half. Both teams had turnover problems in the first half, with ASC committing 20 turnovers and ENMU losing the ball 16 times. In the second half, ASC made only 7 turnovers and the Zias made just 4 turnovers.
