ZIAS CONCLUDE REGULAR SEASON WITH 11-15, 15-2, 15-5, 15-6 WIN OVER WBU
PORTALES, NM — Sophomore middle blocker Christabell Mariner (Pago Pago, Amer. Samoa/Tafuna H.S.) pounded out 16 kills and recorded a .500 hitting percentage, as Eastern New Mexico University defeated Wayland Baptist University, 3-1, Nov. 6 at Greyhound Arena. The Zias rallied after losing the first game to claim an 11-15, 15-2, 15-5, 15-6 victory over the Lady Pioneers.

ENMU concluded the regular season with a 25-10 overall record following the win. Wayland Baptist, playing its final match of the season, finished the year at 7-20.

In addition to her solid hitting, Mariner contributed 9 digs and 5 total blocks for the Zias. She increased her season total for kills to 534, extending the ENMU record she set on Saturday against Tarleton State University. The previous record of 505 kills was set by Jennifer Goble Poyer in 1992.

Senior outside hitter Tanya Heyko (Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.) added 10 kills, a .368 hitting percentage and 11 digs for ENMU. She also registered 3 of ENMU’s 7 service aces.

Jenny Gledhill (Jr., RS, West Jordan, UT/Sheridan J.C.) and Jessica Rowley (Jr., OH, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) each produced 8 kills and 5 digs for the Zias. Freshman middle blocker Amber Barber (San Antonio, TX/Winston Churchill H.S.) earned 10 digs.

Senior back-up setter Stephanie Pratt (Los Alamos, NM/Los Alamos H.S.), playing in her final home match, started for the Zias and set a personal best with 21 assists. Freshman setter Margie Goble (San Antonio, TX/Holmes H.S.) supplied 15 assists and 5 kills.

Wayland Baptist was led by Jennifer Worth, who recorded 10 kills and earned a .280 hitting percentage. Amy Smith also provided 10 kills for the Lady Pioneers. Kari Gibson distributed 28 assists, while Jenny Fletcher and Tandi Morton each contributed 8 digs.

ENMU’s next action will be in the Lone Star Conference Tournament hosted by Cameron University, Nov. 9-11 in Lawton, Okla. The Zias will take on Central Oklahoma in the first round at 4:00 p.m. (MST) on Thursday, Nov. 9. If the Zias win, they will play West Texas A&M, which received a first round bye, on Friday, Nov. 10 at 4:00 p.m. (MST). The LSC Championship match is set for 6:00 p.m. (MST) on Saturday, Nov. 11.
