ZIAS CLINCH LSC TOURNAMENT BERTH WITH 15-2, 15-4, 15-2 ROUT OF KINGSVILLE
PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team defeated Texas A&M University-Kingsville, 15-2, 15-4, 15-2, at Greyhound Arena, Nov. 3, to clinch a Lone Star Conference Tournament berth. ENMU improved to 23-10 overall and 5-4 in the LSC South with the win. TAMU-Kingsville fell to 10-20 overall, 2-7 in the LSC South.

Each LSC division qualifies three teams for the LSC Tournament. In the North Division, Cameron University, the University of Central Oklahoma, and Texas A&M University- Commerce have clinched berths. In the South Division, West Texas A&M University (9-0) has clinched first place and Abilene Christian University (7-3) has clinched second place. ENMU has clinched at least a tie for third place with Angelo State University (5-5).

The Zias and ASU split two head-to-head matches. The next tie-breaker is match results against teams in the division in descending order of finish. Both teams lost twice to West Texas A&M, but the Zias split with Abilene Christian, while ASU lost twice to the Wildcats.

Cameron will host the LSC Tournament in Lawton, Okla., from Thursday, Nov. 9 through Saturday, Nov. 11. ENMU will play Central Oklahoma at 4:00 p.m. (MST) on Thursday, in the first round of the tournament. The winner will take on West Texas A&M on Friday at 4:00 p.m. (MST) in the semifinals. The title match is set for Saturday at 6:00 p.m. (MST).

While clinching their LSC Tournament berth against TAMU-Kingsville, the Zias earned a .550 team hitting percentage and limited TAMUK to a negative .013 hitting percentage. Four Zias earned 6 or more kills, while freshman setter Margie Goble (San Antonio, TX/ Holmes H.S.) recorded 37 assists and 6 digs.

Tanya Heyko (Sr., OH, Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.) led the Zias with 19 kills. She had just 1 kill error and hit .667 ., Heyko also recorded 7 digs, 3 solo blocks and 1 service ace.

Christabell Mariner (So., MB, Pago Pago, Amer. Samoa/Tafuna H.S.) added 9 kills, no kill errors and a .692 hitting percentage. Mariner moved within two kills of the ENMU single season kill record of 505, set by Jennifer Goble Poyer in 1992. Mariner will have a chance to break the record tomorrow (Sat., Nov. 4), when the Zias host Tarleton State University in their final LSC match of the regular season at 2:00 p.m. (MST).

Jessica Rowley (Jr., OH, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) contributed 8 kills and 8 digs for the Zias, while Jenny Gledhill (Jr., RS, West Jordan, UT/Sheridan J.C.) provided 6 kills and 3 digs.

TAMU-Kingsville received 4 kills each from Corina Garza and Angela Granado. Granado also led the Javelinas with 9 digs. Jennifer Rice recorded 3 kills and a .250 hitting percentage. Setter Kara Waddell earned 16 assists.
