ENMU CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS RUN AT TEXAS TECH INVITATIONAL
LUBBOCK, TXMindy Clark (Sr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) took 12th place among runners scoring for their teams in the women’s race, and David Gonzalez (Jr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) placed 15th in the men’s race, at the Texas Tech Open, Oct. 7 at Mae Simmons Park, in Lubbock, Texas. The ENMU men’s cross country team placed 6th out of 7 teams, while the Zias placed 5th out of 5 women’s teams entered in the event.

South Plains College won the men’s team title with a score of 22. Southwestern Indian Polytech Institute placed second at 74, followed by Texas Tech’s “B” team at 77 and New Mexico State at 82. West Texas A&M was fifth with a score of 121, followed by ENMU at 144 and Wayland Baptist at 192. Juan de Bastos of South Plains won medalist honors with a time of 26:10 for the 8-kilometer course.

In the women’s division, New Mexico State took first place with a team score of 20. South Plains took second place with a score of 49. The Texas Tech “B” team placed third at 91 points, followed by West Texas A&M at 100 points and ENMU at 109. Danielle Day of NMSU won the individual title. She completed the 5-kilometer run in 19:41.

Gonzalez was Eastern’s only Top 20 finisher in the men’s race. Michael Hendrix (Fr., Lubbock, TX/Frenship H.S.) placed 24th among runners scoring for their teams. His time was 29:23. Walter Marler (Fr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) finished 33rd in 31.25, Frank Reck (Fr., Louise, TX/Louise H.S.) placed 35th in 33:14, and Keith Clark (Fr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) was 37th in 34:58.

Clark and Nicole Sandoval (Fr., Aztec, NM/Aztec H.S.) represented ENMU in the Top 20 of the women’s race. Sandoval took 20th place among scoring runners with a time of 22:48 for the 5K event. Colleen Banet (So., Albuquerque, NM/Eldorado H.S.) finished one spot behind Sandoval, taking 21st in 23:04. Sammi Lee (So., Aztec, NM/Aztec H.S.) placed 27th and completed the race in 24:38, while Jerrilene Begay (Jr., Crownpoint, NM/Crownpoint H.S.) took 29th in 25:38. Jacqueline Atkins (So., Espanola, NM/Pojoaque H.S.) ran the course in 27:49 as an additional runner for ENMU.

The Greyhounds and Zias will run again on Tuesday, Oct. 10 in a dual meet at West Texas A&M. Following the WTAMU dual, the ENMU cross country teams will help administer — but not enter — the Allsup’s/ENMU Portales Pavement Pounder on Saturday, Oct. 14.
