ZIAS FALL TO TAMU-COMMERCE AT LSC CROSSOVER TOURNAMENT
ABILENE, TX — ABILENE, TX -- Texas A&M University-Commerce defeated Eastern New Mexico University, 3-1, on Saturday, Oct. 7 at the LSC Crossover Volleyball Tournament hosted by Abilene Christian University. The Lions won the first game and the fourth game by just two points each, helping TAMU-Commerce claim a 16-14, 15-9, 8-15, 15-13 triumph over the Zias. TAMUC improved to 12-10 with the victory, while ENMU fell to 18-7. Matches at the LSC Crossover Tournament do not count in the LSC divisional standings.

TAMU-Commerce recorded 80 kills, while limiting the Zias to just 69 kills. Sara Wedburg led the Lions with 20 kills, and also recorded 21 digs. Cindy Gunn contributed 16 kills and 20 digs, while Christy Avillar produced 15 kills and a team-high 24 digs. Melissa Staiger added 62 assists, 10 digs and 5 block assists.

Christabell Mariner (So., MB, Pago Pago, American Samoa/Tafuna H.S.) topped the Zias with 26 kills. She earned a .321 hitting percentage, and achieved 22 digs. Tanya Heyko (Sr., OH, Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.) led all players with 26 digs, and connected for 15 kills.

Jenny Gledhill (Jr., RS/MB, West Jordan, UT/Sheridan J.C.) provided 12 kills, and Margie Goble (Fr., Setter, San Antonio, TX/Holmes H.S.) supplied 57 assists, 15 digs and 4 block assists. Dee Goble (Jr., MB, San Antonio, TX/U. of Central Oklahoma), who previously sustained an ankle injury versus Lubbock Christian on Sept. 19, re-injured her ankle in the third game, and did not complete the match.

ENMU returns home to Greyhound Arena on Monday, Oct. 9 to take on intrastate rival New Mexico Highlands. Match time is slated for 7:00 p.m. (MDT). NMHU entered the weekend with a 14-1 overall record.

Dee Goble’s status for the NMHU match is uncertain. A decision regarding her ability to play in the match will be made on Monday.
