ALLSUP’S/ENMU 26th ANNUAL PORTALES PAVEMENT POUNDER RESULTS
PORTALES, NM — The Allsup’s/ENMU 26th Annual Portales Pavement Pounder brought runners from throughout the region to Portales, New Mexico on Saturday, Oct. 14, for road races covering 1,600 meters, 5 kilometers, 10 kilometers and a half marathon (25,000 meters). A total of 114 runners were entered in the four races.

The start and finish of each race was held near Greyhound Arena on the Eastern New Mexico University campus. The event occurred under ideal weather conditions, which were clear and cool throughout the races.

Here are the top five male finishers and the top five female finishers in each race. For the top finishers in each age group, please see the enclosed race results.

1-MILE RACE
The overall men’s champion in the 1-mile race was 14-year-old Patrick Reagan of Fort Sumner, N.M. in a time of 5:45. Former ENMU cross country runner John Lomasney, from Portales, N.M., took second in 5:53. Jimmy Samarron, Jr. of Levelland, Texas placed third with a time of 6:00, while Derek Wertheim of Fort Sumner, N.M. was fourth in 6:16 and Michael Reeves of Portales, N.M. took fifth in 6:18.

The top four women’s finishers in the 1-mile race were from Tucumcari. Sara Aragor won the event with a time of 6:12. Second place was earned by Natassja Torrez in 6:32. Third place went to Tina Smith, who finished in 7:13. Fourth place was earned by Relissa Smith in a time of 7:35. Rebecca Gonzales of Levelland, Texas prevented a Tucumcari sweep of the top five places by taking fifth in 9:31.

5-KILOMETER RACE
The winner of the men’s division in the 5-kilometer race was George Chavez from Tucumcari, NM, who clocked in at 17:50. Chavez also won the 5K race in 1999. Second place went to Thane Peterson from Roswell, N.M., with a time of 18:47. The third place finisher was Rene Gonzalez of Levelland, Texas in 19:01. Al Gardner of Levelland, Texas claimed fourth place with a time of 19:49, and fifth place was earned by Matthew Calbert of Tucumcari, N.M., who finished in 20:23.

Charlene Calbert from Tucumcari, N.M. won the women’s 5K division in a time of 20:52. She was followed by Kelsey Overton of Yeso, N.M. in second at 21:34. Katherine Mata of Tucumcari, N.M. took third in 22:35, while Laurie Pettigrew of Fort Sumner, N.M. placed fourth in 23:49. Fifth place was won by Lindsay Bakke of Tucumcari with a time of 24:00.

10-KILOMETER RACE
The 10-kilometer race in the men’s division was won by Brendon Seahorn of Portales, N.M. in a time of 47:56. Three other runners from Portales earned Top 5 finishes. Rick Masse took second place in 48:13, Matthew Linton was third at 49:48, and Alvin Rael was fifth at 53:37. Nino Barboa of Albuquerque, N.M. broke up a Portales sweep by taking fourth place in 50:56.

First place in the women’s 10-kilometer race was won by Becky Rowley of Clovis, N.M. in 43:05. Second place was earned by Chris Dimitroff of Fort Sumner, N.M. in 46:42. The third place finisher was Jaclyn Johnson of Portales, N.M. with a time of 50:00. Johnson was followed by Teresa Aragon of Santa Fe, N.M. in fourth place at 59:02 and by Kim Collins of Portales, N.M., who took fifth place in exactly 1 hour.

1/2 MARATHON
The men’s half marathon was won by George Polinsky of Clovis, N.M. Polinsky ran the 25,000-meter course in 1 hour, 46 minutes. He was followed by Chris Stuart of Portales, N.M. in second place in 1 hour, 48 minutes. Third place went to Roy Cope of Los Alamos, N.M. in exactly 2 hours, and fourth place was earned by Ted Williams of Los Alamos, N.M. in 2 hours, 11 minutes. Fifth place was claimed by Daniel Zerbest of Albuquerque, N.M. with a time of 2 hours, 13 minutes.

In the women’s half marathon, there was only one entrant, Chil-Sun Polinsky of Clovis, N.M., who finished the event in 2 hours, 3 minutes.

At the conclusion of each race, runners were treated to water, fresh fruit and orange juice. When all four races were completed, drawings were held to give away special prizes.

The event was sponsored by Allsup’s Convenience Stores and Eastern New Mexico University. Allsup’s has sponsored a road race in the Portales or Clovis area since 1975. ENMU became an official sponsor in 1998.
