ZIAS EDGE WILDCATS IN FIVE-GAME MATCH ENMU Move Into 2nd in LSC South With 14-16, 15-2, 15-7, 11-15, 15-9 Win
ABILENE, TX — Eastern New Mexico University moved into second place in the Lone Star Conference South Division with a 3-2 victory over Abilene Christian University, Saturday, Oct. 14 in Abilene, Texas. The Zias slipped past the Wildcats, 14-16, 15-2, 15-7, 11-15, 15-9 to improved to 20-8 overall and 4-3 in the LSC South. Abilene Christian, which lost for just the fourth time this season, fell to 21-4, 3-3 in the LSC South. ACU and Angelo State, also 3-3, are tied for third place in the division. West Texas A&M is in first at 7-0.

The Zias lost a close game to open the match, 14-16, but controlled the next two games for easy 15-2 and 15-7 wins. In the second game, ENMU recorded a .414 team hitting percentage, while limiting ACU to a .083 percentage. The Zias earned 14 kills during the game, and committed just 2 attacking errors.

ENMU lost the fourth game, 11-15, as Abilene Christian stayed alive in the match. The Zias won the rally-scored fifth game, 15-9 behind a .313 hitting percentage, with 6 kills and just 1 error. Meanwhile, ACU hit .000, registering 8 kills, but also making 8 attacking errors. Eastern New Mexico improved to 3-2 in matches decided in five games.

Christabell Mariner (So., MB, Pago Pago, Amer. Samoa/Tafuna H.S.) led the Zias with 17 kills and a team-high 21 digs. She also earned 5 block assists. Tanya Heyko (Sr., OH, Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.) added 15 kills and 17 digs, to go with 4 service aces.

Jenny Gledhill (Jr., RS/MB, West Jordan, UT/Sheridan J.C.) provided 13 kills, 14 digs, and 8 total blocks, just missing a triple-double. She achieved a .243 hitting percentage. ENMU’s balanced attack also received 12 kills and 16 digs from Jessica Rowley (Jr., OH, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.).

Freshman setter Margie Goble (San Antonio, TX/Holmes H.S.) was credited with 53 assists and supplied 13 digs. Margie’s sister, Dee Goble (Jr., MB, San Antonio, TX/Marshall H.S.) contributed 5 kills and 10 total blocks (9 block assists).

ACU was paced by Jennifer Purvis, who earned 17 kills and 22 digs. Lindsay DeHoff and Misti Germany each provided 14 kills and 10 digs, while setter Randi Kinzer dished out 55 assists and recorded 16 digs.

ENMU’s next matches will be played in Canyon, Texas at the Lady Buff Challenge, hosted by West Texas A&M. The Zias will take on Cameron University at 1:00 p.m. (MDT) on Friday, Oct. 20, and will play St. Mary’s University (Texas) at 5:00 p.m. (MDT) later the same day. ENMU will finish the tournament by facing Central Oklahoma at 4:00 p.m. (MDT) on Saturday, Oct. 21.

The Zias will return to West Texas A&M on Tuesday, Oct. 24 to take on the Lady Buffs in a Lone Star Conference South Division match. The ENMU-WTAMU match is set to begin get underway at 6:00 p.m. (MDT).
