CHRISTABELL MARINER NAMED LSC SOUTH HITTER-OF-THE-WEEK
PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University middle blocker Christabell Mariner (So., Pago Pago, American Samoa/Tafuna High School) has been named Lone Star Star Conference South Division Hitter-of-the-Week for her efforts Oct. 15-22, 2000. Mariner helped the Zias achieve a 2-1 record during the week, with all three matches played at the Lady Buff Southwest Region Challenge, hosted by West Texas A&M University, Oct. 20-21, in Canyon, Texas. ENMU upped its overall record to 22-9 on the season.

Mariner was one of seven players named to the Lady Buff Challenge All-Tournament Team. She earned 46 kills (4.2 per game), to go with 38 digs (3.5 avg.) and 19 total blocks (1.7 avg.). Mariner also achieved a .269 hitting percentage. She recorded 4 assists and 1 service ace.

ENMU opened the Lady Buff Challenge with a 5-15, 15-6, 12-15, 16-14, 15-11 win against Cameron University (Okla.) on Oct. 20. It was Eastern’s first victory versus Cameron since Oct. 1, 1994.

The Zias played again shortly after the Cameron match, and lost to St. Mary’s University (Texas), 15-10, 15-12, 15-13, as the Lady Rattlers improved to 24-4. Eastern completed the tournament on Oct. 21 with a 15-11, 15-12, 15-13 win over Central Oklahoma.

For the season, Mariner leads the Zias with 475 kills (4.2 per game) and a .286 hitting percentage. She has recorded 323 digs (2.9 avg.), 147 total blocks (1.3 avg.) and 30 service aces (0.3 avg.).

The Zias return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 24, when they travel to Canyon, Texas for a Lone Star Conference South Division match against West Texas A&M. WTAMU currently leads the LSC South with a 7-0 record. ENMU is tied for second in the division with Abilene Christian. The Zias and the Wildcats are each 4-3 in LSC play. Match time for ENMU’s contest against WTAMU is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (MDT).
