DAVID GONZALEZ PLACES FOURTH AT FORT LEWIS CROSS COUNTRY MEET
DURANGO, CO — Junior runner David Gonzalez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) took fourth place at the Fort Lewis College Tom Strandt Invitational, Sept. 16 in Durango, Colo. Gonzalez finished the 8-kilometer course in 28:51, just four seconds behind the third place finisher and one second ahead of Reynaldo Yazzie, the top finisher for Fort Lewis.

The ENMU men did not post a team score. Other runners for the men’s team were Walter Marler (Fr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.), Frank Reck (Fr., Louise, TX/Louise H.S.) and Keith Clark (Fr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.).

Marler took 16th place with a time of 30:48. Reck finished in 32:57 and took 20th place. Clark took 23rd place after clocking in with a time of 35:30. Nicolas Musyoki of Diné College won the race in 26:37.

Fort Lewis won the men’s team title with a score of 32. Southwest Indian Polytechnic Institute finished a close second with 36 points. Diné College was third with a score of 64.

In the women’s division, Eastern New Mexico placed third out of five teams that recorded scores. Fort Lewis won the women’s team title with a score of 32. Mesa State College claimed second place with a score of 58. ENMU’s edged out Trinidad State Junior College. for third place, recording a score of 84, compared to an 89 for Trinidad. Fifth place went to Southwest Indian Polytechnic Institute with a score of 96. Diné did not field a complete team.

Individually, Mindy Clark (Sr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) finished 8th and Nicole Sandoval (Fr., Aztec, NM/Aztec H.S.) finished 9th for the Zias. Clark recorded a time of 28:18.04 for the 6K course. Sandoval crossed the finish line at almost the same moment in 28:18.50. Other ENMU runners were Colleen Banet (Albuquerque, NM/Eldorado H.S.) in 16th place (among scoring runner) at 29:42, Sammi Lee (Aztec, NM/Aztec H.S.) in 24th place in 31:51, Jerrilene Begay (Crownpoint, NM/Crownpoint H.S.) in 27th place in 33:11, and Jacqueline Atkins (Espanola, NM/Pojoaque H.S.) in 30th place in 35:28. Christina Ruiter of Fort Lewis won the individual women’s title, clocking in at 25:03.

The Greyhounds and Zias return to action on Saturday, Sept. 23. Both teams will run at the New Mexico State University Meet.
