EASTERN NEW MEXICO DOWNS LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN Zias defeat Lady Chaps 15-10, 15-12, 13-15, 15-7
PORTALES, NM — Junior middle blocker Christabell Mariner (Pago Pago, Amer. Samoa/Tafuna H.S.) recorded 21 kills and 21 digs, leading the Eastern New Mexico University Zias to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Lady Chaps of Lubbock Christian University, Sept. 19 at Greyhound Stadium. ENMU defeated LCU, 15-10, 15-12, 13-15, 15-7. The non-conference win improved the Zias to 12-4 on the season. Lubbock Christian dropped to 6-4.

The Zias won the first game, 15-10, then trailed 5-1 and 7-2 at the start of the second game. ENMU tied the game, 8-8, on its way to a 15-12 triumph. In the third game, ENMU trailed 6-3 and 9-6, but the game was tied, 13-13, before LCU scored the final two points.

Eastern never trailed in the fourth game, after quickly building a 5-1 advantage. The Lady Chaps battled to within a single point at 6-5, and trailed by just two point at 9-7. ENMU recorded the final six points of the game for a 15-7 triumph.

Mariner’s 21 kills, 21 digs, and 7 total blocks were all team highs. Margie Goble (Fr., S, San Antonio, TX/Holmes H.S.) added a triple-double, with 10 kills (.526 hitting percentage), 56 assists and 13 digs. Jenny Gledhill (Jr., MB, West Jordan, UT/Sheridan J.C.) and Jessica Rowley (Jr., OH, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) each contributed 14 kills. Rowley also provided 16 digs and 4 total blocks.

Lubbock Christian’s top player was Julie Williams, with 17 kills, 10 digs and a .371 hitting percentage. Karen Gasch supplied 12 kills and 10 digs, while Misty Tarbet connected for 9 kills and 10 digs. Shelby Smith guided the LCU offense with 54 assists.

ENMU travels to the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas, this weekend. The Zias will take on Southeastern Oklahoma at 2:00 p.m. (MST) on Friday, Sept. 22. ENMU will play two matches on Saturday, Sept. 23, taking on Central Oklahoma at 11:00 a.m. (MST) and Midwestern State at 3:00 p.m. (MST). Another LSC Crossover Tournament is slated for Oct. 6-7 at Abilene Christian University.

The Zias’ next home match in scheduled for Tuesday, Oct 3 against LSC South rival West Texas A&M. Match time at Greyhound Arena is set for 7:00 p.m. (MST). Last year, an ENMU record crowd of 1,703 attended the ENMU-WTAMU match at Greyhound Arena. It was the fourth largest crowd in NCAA Division II last year.
