MINDY CLARK, DAVID GONZALEZ TOP FINISHERS FOR ENMU AT NMSU MEET
LAS CRUCES, NM — Senior Mindy Clark (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) and junior David Gonzalez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) were the top finishers for Eastern New Mexico University at the New Mexico State University Kachina Classic, Sept. 23 in Las Cruces, N.M. Clark led the women’s team with a 19th place finish among runners who scored for their teams, while Gonzalez finished 23rd in the men’s division.

Clark concluded the women’s race in 21:58.40. She finished 19th among scorers and 24th among all runners, including those running unattached or for Southwestern Indian Polytech Institute, which did not field a complete team. Nicole Sandoval (Fr., Aztec, NM/Aztec H.S.) finished in 22nd place among scorers with a time of 23:07.10. Sammi Lee (So., Aztec, NM/ Aztec H.S.) took 24th place in 23:50.70, while Colleen Banet (So., Albuquerque, NM/Eldorado H.S.) finished 25th in 24:01.20 and Jerrilene Begay (Jr., Crownpoint, NM/Crownpoint H.S.) placed 27th in 24:57.70.

The University of Texas at El Paso won the women’s team title with a score of 31. The University of New Mexico was second with a team score of 40. New Mexico State University took 3rd place at 49, and was followed by El Paso Community College in 4th place at 95 and by Eastern New Mexico in fifth place at 117.

Gonzalez clocked in at 26:46.32 in the men’s race. He took 23rd place among scorers and was 33rd overall. Michael Hendricks (Fr., Lubbock, TX/Frenship H.S.) finished 25th among scorers in a time of 27:05.36. Walter Marler (Fr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) took 26th place with a time of 27:52.34. He finished just a few seconds ahead of Frank Reck (Fr., Louise, TX/Louise H.S.), who completed the course in 27:58.75 for 27th place. Keith Clark (Fr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) finished 30th in a time of 31:14.41.

In the men’s division, New Mexico claimed first place with a team score of 27. Second place went to UTEP with a score of 33. Southwestern Indian Polytech took 3rd place with a score of 82, and New Mexico State was 4th with a score of 86. El Paso C.C. took 5th place with a score of 106, and Eastern New Mexico was 6th with a score of 131.

The Greyhounds and Zias are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, Oct. 7 at the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock, Texas. Start time for the meet is set for 8:00 a.m. (MDT).
