ZIAS DEFEAT CENTRAL OKLAHOMA AND MIDWESTERN STATE TO IMPROVE TO 15-4
DENTON, TX — Eastern New Mexico University defeated two Lone Star Conference North Division opponents on Saturday, Sept. 23, in the LSC Crossover Volleyball Tournament hosted by Texas Woman’s University. ENMU downed Central Oklahoma, 3-1, then swept Midwestern State, 3-0. The Zias won 15-5, 15-10, 14-16, 15-9 against UCO, then claimed a 15-11, 15-1, 15-11 victory over MSU. With the wins, ENMU upped its overall record to 15-4. Central Oklahoma dropped to 10-5, while Midwestern State fell to 4-12.

In the match against Central Oklahoma, the Zias recorded a solid .263 team hitting percentage, including an impressive .462 hitting percentage in the opening game. Three ENMU players achieved hitting percentages of at least .300 for the match: Margie Goble (Fr., S, San Antonio, TX/Holmes H.S.) at .385, Jenny Gledhill (Jr., RS/MB, West Jordan, UT/ Sheridan J.C.) at .368, and Dee Goble (Jr., MB, San Antonio, TX) at .300.

Dee Goble played at Central Oklahoma in 1997 and 1998. She transferred to ENMU last year, but did not play volleyball. She recorded 7 kills with 1 attacking error in her first match against her former teammates.

Margie Goble earned 6 kills with 1 attacking error, while dishing out 47 assists and making 14 digs. Gledhill provided 9 kills and 6 total blocks. Overall, the Zias had 4 block solos and 20 block assists.

Christabell Mariner (So., MB, Pago Pago, Amer. Samoa/Tafuna H.S.) led the Zias with 14 kills. She registered a .275 hitting percentage, and also supplied 10 digs and 6 total blocks. Jessica Rowley (Jr., OH, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) connected for 12 kills and 16 digs. Senior outside hitter Tanya Heyko (Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.) added 11 kills and a match-high 24 digs.

UCO was led by 1999 North Division Player-of-the-Year Alma Brahimaj, who topped all players with 20 kills. Brahimaj also achieved 23 digs. Lexy Fortner pounded out 15 kills, and earned 22 digs. Setter Stacey Meek achieved 39 assists and 12 digs.

The Zias hit the ball well against Midwestern State in recording the 3-game victory over their former LSC South rivals. ENMU finished the match with a .311 hitting percentage, led by Rowley, who topped all players with 17 kills to go with a .517 hitting percentage. Mariner added 12 kills, 8 digs and 5 block assists for the Zias, while Margie Goble supplied 35 assists. Heyko registered 8 kills and 9 digs.

The Zias totaled 3 block solos and 12 block assists on defense, while MSU managed just 2 block solos and no block assists. ENMU won the first game, 15-11, then routed the Lady Indians, 15-1, in the second game. The Zias closed out the match with another 15-11 win in the third game.

MSU’s leading player was Joni Martin, with 15 kills, 6 digs and 2 service aces. Ashley Hester was credited with 5 kills and 5 digs, while Amber Ashley recorded 5 digs. Setter Sydney Haisler earned 27 assists and achieved 4 digs.
