ZIAS SWEEP PAST TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE,
15-11, 15-10, 15-12
KINGSVILLE, TX — The Eastern New Mexico University Zias needed just three games to defeat Texas A&M University-Kingsville in a Lone Star Conference South Division match, Sept. 30 in Kingsville, Texas. The Zias downed the Lady Javelinas, 15-11, 15-10, 15-12, to improve to 17-4 overall, including 3-1 in the LSC South. TAMU-Kingsville fell to 4-14 on the season, 0-4 in the LSC South.

Senior outside hitter Tanya Heyko (Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.) topped Eastern’s attack with 18 kills, a .361 hitting percentage and 13 digs. Christabell Mariner (So., MB, Pago Pago, Amer. Samoa/Tafuna H.S.) added 15 kills, a .357 hitting percentage. 11 digs a 4 block assists. Jessica Rowley (Jr., OH, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) also reached double digits in kills and digs, providing 12 kills and 12 digs.

Margie Goble (Fr., Setter, San Antonio, TX/Holmes H.S.) contributed 43 assists and 14 digs. Goble helped the ENMU offense finish the match with a .232 hitting percentage.

Meanwhile, TAMU-Kingsville was limited to a .177 hitting percentage. The Lady Javelinas were led by Sherri Cain with 15 kills. Angela Granado recorded 9 digs, while Kara Waddell provided 25 assists and 17 digs.

ENMU’s next match is on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at Greyhound Arena, when the Zias host West Texas A&M University. WTAMU currently leads the LSC South at 5-0. The Lady Buffs, 18-1 overall, are ranked #4 in NCAA Division II. The Zias anticipate a large crowd for Tuesday’s match. Last year, an ENMU school record crowd of 1,703 watches the Zias and WTAMU on Oct. 12, 1999. It was the fourth largest crowd in NCAA Division II last season.
