ENMU CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS OPEN 2000 SEASON AT UTEP MEET
EL PASO, TX — The Eastern New Mexico University cross country teams opened the 2000 season on Friday, Sept. 1 at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational hosted by the University of Texas at El Paso. The Zias finished fifth out of six teams in the women’s division. ENMU’s men’s team had four runners and did not record a team score.

The 2.9-mile women’s course and the 4.2-mile men’s course were both at the Santa Teresa Country Club. Oklahoma State won the women’s division with a team score of 42, while Southern Methodist won the men’s division with a team score of 35.

Other women’s team scores were UTEP at 54, New Mexico State at 55, the University of New Mexico at 75, ENMU at 155 and El Paso C.C. at 169. Other scores for men’s teams were New Mexico at 40, UTEP at 74, the SMU freshmen at 122, New Mexico State at 127, and El Paso C.C. at 146.

Mindy Clark (Sr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) was Eastern’s top female runner. She clocked in with a time of 19:44 for 22nd place among runners who scored for their teams. Her time was just 27 seconds away from a Top 15 finish.

Nicole Sandoval (Fr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) took 28th place in 20:23, while Colleen Banet (So., Albuquerque, NM/ Eldorado H.S.) finished 32nd in 21:38. Sammi Lee (Fr.) placed 35th in 22:06 and Jerrilene Begay (Crownpoint, NM/Crownpoint H.S.) placed 38th in 25:24.

David Gonzalez (Jr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) led the ENMU men’s team with a 26th place finish in 24:34. Michael Hendrix (Fr.) placed 40th in a time of 26:36. Frank Reck (Fr.) was 45th in 27:34 and Keith Clark (Fr.) was 46th in 28:25.

Eastern returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 9 at the Texas Tech Invitational. The meet is scheduled to start with the men’s race at 8:00 a.m. (MST). The women’s race is slated to begin at 8:45 a.m. (MST).
