NEW MEXICO, WESTERN NEW MEXICO OFF TO 2-0 STARTS AT TORNEO DE AMIGAS
ENMU defeated Fort Lewis College, 15-6, 15-8, 15-9, and downed Colorado School of Mines, 18-16, 15-5, 15-12. WNMU routed Fort Hays State University, 15-0, 15-2, 15-3, and defeated Colorado Mines, 15-12, 15-10, 12-15, 15-8. ENMU and WNMU, both 2-0, are a game ahead of Fort Hays State, 1-1. Colorado Mines and Fort Lewis are 0-2. In the only match that didn’t involve Eastern or Western, Fort Hays defeated Fort Lewis, 15-7, 15-11, 15-10. In the Zias’ win over Fort Lewis, Tanya Heyko (Sr., OH, Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.) led all players with 14 kills. She also recorded 16 digs and provided 2 service aces. Christabell Mariner (So., MB, Pago Pago, Amer. Samoa) and Jenny Gledhill (Jr., RS, West Jordan, UT/ Sheridan J.C.) each added 10 kills, while Margie Goble (Fr., S, San Antonio, TX/Holmes H.S.) earned 37 assists and 8 digs. The Zias achieved a .349 hitting percentage during the match. Fort Lewis was led by Jenny Ruiter, with 123 kills and 8 digs. Moreen Baylis added 11 kills and 10 digs for the Skyhawks. Fort Lewis hit .223 as a team. Against Colorado Mines, the Zias slipped past the Orediggers, 18-16, in the first game, then took control of the match with a relatively easy 15-5 win in the second game. Several reserve players entered the match midway through the third game, helping ENMU close out the match with a 15-12 win. Mariner topped the Zias with 16 kills, while earning an impressive .464 hitting percentage. Heyko contributed 14 kills and 14 digs, and Jessica Rowley (Jr., OH, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) supplied 13 kills and 12 digs. Gledhill and junior outside hitter Annette Luafalemana- Tanielu each provided 13 digs for the Zias, while Margie Goble dished out 39 assists. Colorado Mines received 18 kills and 6 digs from Coree Kammerzell. Laurie Alzheimer earned 13 kills and 14 digs. ENMU hit .240 for the match, while limiting the Orediggers to a .145 hitting percentage. The Torneo de Amigas concludes on Saturday, Sept. 2, with 5 matches scheduled. The first match of the day, pitting ENMU against WNMU, is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. (MST). |
