ZIAS WIN TORNEO DE AMIGAS WITH 4-0 RECORD
PORTALES -- The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team won both of its matches on Saturday, Sept. 2, to take first place in the Torneo de Amigas with a perfect 4-0 record. The Zias concluded their undefeated tourney run with an 11-15, 18-16, 15-7, 15-7 victory over in-state rival Western New Mexico University and a 15-10, 15-10, 15-8 win over Fort Hays State University.

The Torneo de Amigas title helped the Zias improve to 7-2 on the season. Against WNMU, the Zias fell behind one game to zero after the Lady Mustangs took the first game, 15-11. Western New Mexico earned four game points in the second game, but the Zias rallied for an 18-16 win to keep from falling behind two games to none. ENMU took control of the match with a 15-7 win in the third game, then ended the match with another 15-7 win in the fourth game. Tanya Heyko (Sr., OH, Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.) had an outstanding match against WNMU. She set personal career highs with 20 kills and 31 digs. She also contributed 4 assists, 4 service aces and 2 total blocks. She committed just 4 attacking errors, and finished the match with a .340 hitting percentage. Christabell Mariner (So., MB, Pago Pago, Amer. Samoa) contributed 11 kills, 12 digs and 4 block assists. She also provided 3 service aces, helping the Zias to a season-high 12 service aces overall. Jessica Rowley (Jr., OH, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) pounded out 16 kills and recorded 18 digs, while freshman setter Margie Goble (San Antonio, TX/Holmes H.S.) added 42 assists, 8 kills, 3 aces and 19 kills.

Western New Mexico was paced by Missy Zankich, who totaled 18 kills and 15 digs. Erin Fieseler earned 15 kills for the Lady Mustangs, who fell to 6-2 on the season. The Zias swept Fort Hays State in three games. Heyko led ENMU with 12 kills and 15 digs. She hit .416 for the match, and also provided 2 service aces. Rowley registered 11 kills and 8 digs. Mariner earned 7 kills to go with 8 digs and 3 block assists. Margie Goble, recorded 27 assists, and Dee Goble (Jr., MB, San Antonio, TX/U. of Central Oklahoma) made 6 kills on 9 total attacks for a .667 hitting percentage.

FHSU’s top hitter was Andrea Logan, with 12 kills and 5 digs. Kristiana Molina supplied 8 kills, and setter Elizabeth Schukman recorded 30 assists, 6 digs and 2 block solos. The Lady Tigers dropped to 1-7 overall. ENMU’s 4-0 record was followed by Western New Mexico’s 3-1 tournament mark. Colorado School of Mines concluded the event with a 2-2 record, while Fort Hays State finished 1-3 and Fort Lewis College went 0-4.

Eastern New Mexico remains at home next weekend, as the Zias host Abilene Christian University on Friday, Sept. 8 (7:00 p.m. MST) and take on Angelo State University on Saturday, Sept. 9 (2:00 p.m. MST). The pair of matches open Lone Star Conference play for the Zias, who took second place in the LSC South last season with an 8-4 conference record.
