HEYKO, MARINER NAMED TO TORNEO DE AMIGAS ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
PORTALES, NMTanya Heyko (Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.) and ENMU sophomore middle blocker Christabell Mariner (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Tafuna High School) are two of seven players named to the All-Tournament Team for the 2000 Torneo de Amigas, hosted by the Zias, Sept. 1-2 at Greyhound Arena. The Zias won the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.

Heyko earned 60 kills (4.6 per game) and 76 digs (5.9 per game), while leading the Zias to the tournament title. She achieved a .295 hitting percentage, and also supplied 9 service aces, 8 assists and 4 total blocks. Heyko recorded career highs with 20 kills and 31 digs in Eastern’s 11-15, 18-16, 15-7, 15-7 victory over in-state rival Western New Mexico on Saturday (Sept. 2).

Mariner powered her way to 44 kills (3.4 per game) and 15 blocks (1.2 per game). She finished the tournament with a .297 hitting percentage, while providing 6 service aces and 33 digs (2.5 per game). She earned double-digit kill totals in 3 of the 4 matches, including 16 kills against Colorado School of Mines in an 18-16, 15-5, 15-12 win on Friday (Sept. 1).

All five squads participating in the Torneo de Amigas placed at least one player on the All-Tournament Team. Other players named to the team where Laurie Alzheimer (So., OH) and Coree Kammerzell (Jr., OH) of Colorado Mines, Andrea Logan (Fr., OH) of Fort Hays State, Jenny Ruiter (Sr., OH) of Fort Lewis, and Erin Fieseler (So., MB) of Western New Mexico.

In addition to defeating Western New Mexico and Colorado Mines, the Zias also downed Fort Lewis College and Fort Hays State University. The Zias swept past Fort Lewis, 15-6, 15-8, 15-9, on Friday, and downed Fort Hays State, 15-10, 15-10, 15-8, on Saturday.The Zias concluded the tournament with an overall record of 7-2, including 5 straight wins.

ENMU will return to action on Friday, Sept. 8, when the Zias host Abilene Christian University in a Lone Star Conference match at 7:00 p.m. (MST). The Zias also play at home on Saturday, Sept. 9 against LSC opponent Angelo State University. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m. (MST).
