TONMAR JOHNSON NAMED LSC SOUTH SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
PORTALES, NM — Tonmar Johnson, a 5’9”, 175-pound senior cornerback at Eastern New Mexico University, has been named Lone Star Conference South Division Special Teams Player-of-the-Week for his efforts in ENMU’s 41-6 win over Western New Mexico University on Saturday, Sept. 2.

Johnson is the first player chosen for the new award, which was added to Offensive Player-of-the-Week and Defensive Player-of-the-Week for the 2000 season. Johnson returned a first-quarter punt 81 yards for a touchdown, giving ENMU a 14-0 lead. It was the longest punt return in ENMU history, breaking the previous record of 71 yards, set by Tony Cavalier against Midwestern State in 1998.

Cavalier also scored on his return. Johnson has set an ENMU return record in each of three consecutive games. He returned a blocked field goal 80 yards for a touchdown against West Texas A&M on Nov. 6, 1999, then returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown against Midwestern State on Nov. 13, 1999. His 81-yard punt return against WNMU continued the string of record-setting scores.

Overall, Johnson returned three punts against WNMU for 83 yards. He provided solid coverage in the secondary, but did not record any tackles. The Greyhounds, 1-0 on the season, will play at New Mexico Highlands on Saturday, Sept. 9. Kickoff in Las Vegas, N.M. is set for 7:00 p.m. (MST).
