ENMU CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS RUN AT TEXAS TECH RED RAIDER OPEN
LUBBOCK, TX — The Eastern New Mexico University cross country teams competed at the Red Raider Open on Saturday, Sept. 9. The event, hosted by Texas Tech University, was held at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock, Texas. ENMU finished last among four teams in the women’s division. The Greyhounds had just four runners, and did not earn a team score in the men’s race.

Adams State College won both divisions, recording a score of 19 in the women’s race and a score of 20 in the men’s race. Texas Tech placed second in the women’s division with a score of 45, followed by South Plains College at 75 and ENMU at 98. West Texas A&M and Wayland Baptist did not field complete women’s teams.

TTU also took second place in the men’s race, earning a score of 40. South Plains finished third with a score of 69, West Texas A&M was fourth at 119 and Wayland Baptist was fifth at 144.

Sarah Meyer of Adams State won the women’s race in 19:28. Her teammate, Jackie Pacentrilli took second place four seconds later, and another Adams State runner, Liz Brown, took third in 19:45. In the men’s division, Gezachw Yossef of Texas Tech took first place in 25:39. He concluded the race just 5 seconds in front of Brandon Leslie of Adams State.

Mindy Clark (Sr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) of Eastern New Mexico took 14th place in the women’s race, with a time of 21:45. Freshman Nicole Sandoval (Carlsbad, NM/ Carlsbad H.S.) earned 17th place in 23:06.

Other runners scoring for the ENMU women’s team were Colleen Banet (So., Albuquerque, NM/Eldorado H.S.), who completed the course in 24:20 for 20th place, Sammi Lee (Fr.), who finished in 24:22 to take 21st, and Jerrilene Begay (Crownpoint, NM/Crownpoint H.S.), who crossed the finish line in 26th place in a time of 26:26. Amber Van Baalen (Sr., Albuquerque, NM/Eldorado H.S.) took 27th place and clocked in at 27:08.

David Gonzalez (Jr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.), who led the Greyhounds at the UTEP Meet on Sept. 1, was unavailable due to a personal commitment. In his absence, Michael Hendrix (Fr.) was ENMU’s top finisher in 30:34 (43rd among all runners, including those running unattached). Walter Marler (Fr.) clocked in at 31:29, Frank Reck (Fr.) concluded the race in 32:22, and Keith Clark (Fr.) finished in a time of 34:17.

Eastern New Mexico’s cross country teams will travel to Durango, Colo. next Saturday (Sept. 16) to compete in the Fort Lewis College Tom Strandt Invitational. The Hounds and Zias are scheduled to run at New Mexico State on Sept. 23.
