ABILENE CHRISTIAN DEFEATS ENMU IN FIVE GAMES Wildcats win LSC opener 5-15, 15-11, 14-16, 16-14, 15-8
PORTALES, NM — The Abilene Christian University volleyball team won the final two games against Eastern New Mexico University, Sept. 8 at Greyhound Arena, as the Wildcats slipped past the Zias, 3-2, in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams. ACU won 5-15, 15-11, 14-16, 16-14, 15-8 to improve to 9-1 on the season. ENMU dropped to 7-3 overall.

The first game went quickly, as ENMU took a 15-5 win. The Zias recorded 12 kills and a .286 team hitting percentage during the game. ACU earned 9 kills, but also made 9 errors.

Abilene Christian took control of the second game by building a 9-1 lead. ENMU cut the deficit to 9-4, but the Wildcats eventually won, 15-11. In the third game, Eastern trailed 8-2 and 11-5, but cut the deficit to 14-11. The Zias scored the final five points for a 16-14 triumph.

The fourth game was a close, intense battle. ACU gained a 3-point advantage, 14-11, but was unable to score the winning point before ENMU tied the score, 14-14. The Wildcats recorded the next two points for a 16-14 win, as ACU tied the match at two games apiece.

ACU produced four service aces in the rally-scored fifth game. The Wildcats quickly achieved a 5-0 lead, with two of the points resulting from aces. ENMU also trailed 8-3, but cut the deficit to 9-5. ACU countered with three points for a 12-5 advantage. The Zias earned two consecutive points to pull within 12-7, but never got closer. The Wildcats won 15-8.

Tanya Heyko (Sr., OH, Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.) led the Zias with 19 kills and 20 digs. Jessica Rowley (Jr., OH, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) added 15 kills and 21 digs, while Christabell Mariner (So., MB, Pago Pago, Amer. Samoa/Tafuna H.S.) contributed 14 kills, 13 digs and 5 block assists. Freshman setter Margie Goble (San Antonio, TX/Holmes H..S.) recorded 56 assists and 17 digs. Her sister, junior outside hitter Dee Goble (San Antonio, TX/U. of Central Oklahoma) achieved 8 kills, a .333 hitting percentage and 7 total blocks.

ACU was led by Misti Germany with 15 kills. Jennifer Purvis and Lindsay DeHoff each connected for 14 kills and 17 digs. Randi Kinzer was credited with 59 assists, while Nora Oglesby supplied 11 kills and 16 digs.

Eastern New Mexico remains at home on Saturday, Sept. 9, to take on the Rambelles of Angelo State University. The Lone Star Conference match is scheduled to get underway at Greyhound Arena at 2:00 p.m. (MST).
