DOWNS SOUTHWEST BAPTIST, 5-0 AT BRONCHO INVITATIONAL Eastern New Mexico improved to 6-3 on the season, while winning its fourth consecutive match. Southwest Baptist dropped to 2-17 overall. The Zias won despite the absence of Eastern’s top tennis player, Layla Turner (Jr., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.). Turner, ranked #16 in NCAA Division II, did not make the trip to Edmond because she was feeling ill. The Zias hope to have Turner back for the Lone Star Conference Tournament, Apr. 19-21 in Oklahoma City, Okla. With Turner unable to compete, the Zias moved their #2 doubles team of Lisa Weinman (So., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) and Sarah Pennington (Jr., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) up to the #1 doubles flight. Weinman and Pennington won 8-0, shutting out the SW Baptist’s team of Lindsay Hickel and Becca Brotherton. Ananda Kautz (Fr., Rio de Janeiro, BRA/Pleasant Valley H.S., CA) and Sarah Salazar (So., Belen, NM/Saint Pius X H.S.), normally at #3 doubles, defeated Jodi Bledsoe and Ann Blankinship, 8-0. Turner’s doubles partner, Bethanie Nix (Fr., Spring, TX/Newman Smith H.S.), teamed with Cata at #3 doubles. They defeated SBU’s team of Stephine Lea and Nicole Sentlinger, 8-2. Cata won #5 singles by default and Pennington won #3 singles over Bledsoe, 6-0, 6-0. ENMU is 1-0 in the tournament, which features a dual match format. The Broncho Invitational continues through Saturday, Apr. 14. |
