ZIAS SWEEP TEXAS WOMAN’S, 7-2 & 5-2
ENMU Remains in First Place in LSC South
DENTON, TX — Senior pitcher Jennifer Harrer (RHP, Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian H.S.) threw a complete-game 4-hitter, and sophomore pitcher Dawn Murray (RHP, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) added a complete-game 9-hitter, as Eastern New Mexico University swept a double-header from Texas Woman’s University, Apr. 14 in Denton, Texas. ENMU won the first game, 7-2, and took the second game, 5-2.

The Zias improved to 28-10-1, including 8-2 in the Lone Star Conference South Division. TWU lost all four games in the series and dropped to 17-22 overall, 4-12 in the LSC South.

ENMU is in first place in the LSC South. Abilene Christian holds second place at 8-4, and Tarleton State is in third at 6-4. The Zias have clinched an LSC Tournament berth, and will clinch at least a tie for the South Division title if they split against ACU next weekend. ENMU needs three wins, or two wins and one Tarleton State loss, to win the title outright.

Harrer gave up all 4 hits, including 3 doubles, in the first inning of the opener, as TWU took a 2-0 lead. Teresa Flores and Nickie Engelbrecht each hit an RBI double during the stanza. The Pioneers had just four base runners the rest of the way, on two walks, a hit batsman and an error. Harrer struck out 4 batters, while improving to 16-5 on the season.

Eastern New Mexico cut the deficit in half in the top of the second inning. Jessica Rowley (Jr., SS, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) provided the run with her second homer of the season. The Zias moved in front, 3-2, in the top of the third. Kim Paschall (Sr., CF, Midland, TX/ Midland H.S.) walked with two outs, then scored on a double to left field by Rachel Mohler (Jr., 3B, Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.). Maegan Rhoten (Fr., OF/1B/P, Albuquerque, NM/ St. Pius X H.S.) also doubled, driving in Mohler with the go-ahead run.

Two runs in the fifth inning and two more runs in the seventh, gave ENMU a 5-run lead. Sarah Rempp (Sr., C, Marshalltown, IA/Greeley Central H.S., CO) doubled to left center to drive in both runs in the fifth. Paschall tripled to start the seventh. She scored on a single by Rhoten, who later scored when Rowley hit into a fielder’s choice.

Paschall was 2 for 3 with 2 triples and 3 runs during the game. Mohler, Rhoten, Rempp and Karena Martinez (Fr., OF/DH, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) each added 2 hits for the Zias. ENMU never trailed in the second game. Paschall blasted a leadoff double in the first inning, then scored on a single by Mohler.

The 1-0 lead was extended to 5-0 with 4 runs in the fourth inning. Paschall hit a bases-loaded double to drive in two of the runs. A sacrifice fly by Mohler and a fielder’s choice by Rhoten brought home the other runs.

The Pioneers scored both of their runs with two outs in the fifth stanza. Flores singled, then Engelbrecht homered, cutting TWU’s deficit to 5-2. Murray gave up just one hit in the final two innings — a single by Amara Ellis. ENMU recorded the final six outs on infield grounders.

Paschall was 2 for 4 with a double, 2 runs and 2 RBIs in the second game. Mohler added 2 hits and 2 RBIs in 3 at bats, while Murray went 2 for 3 with a run scored. Murray also improved her pitching record to 5-0. She registered 2 strikeouts and allowed 1 walk. Engelbrecht, Ellis and Monica Romero each went 2 for 3 for Texas Woman’s. In addition to Engelbrecht’s homer, the Pioneers also received a double from Romero.

The Zias travel to Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Tuesday, Apr. 17, to make up a double-header previously postponed by wet grounds. The double-header is set to begin at 12:00 noon (MDT).

Eastern concludes the regular season with a 4-game LSC series against Abilene Christian on Friday, Apr. 20 and Saturday, Apr. 21, at Zia Softball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (MDT) on Friday and for 12:00 noon (MDT) on Saturday.
