DeHOYOS STRIKES OUT 12 IN 5-HIT VICTORY AS GREYHOUNDS SPLIT WITH TEXANS
STEPHENVILLE, TX — Junior right-handed pitcher Gabe DeHoyos (Artesia, NM/ Trinidad J.C.) threw a complete-game 5-hitter and struck out 12 batters, as Eastern New Mexico University defeated Tarleton State University, 5-2, in the second game of a double-header, April 20 at Cecil Ballow Field. Tarleton State won the first game, 8-4, as the Greyhounds and the Texans split the Lone Star Conference twinbill.

ENMU, 25-27 overall and 10-13 in the LSC South, will take on TSU again on Saturday, April 21, in one 9-inning game. The Greyhounds lead TSU by 1/2-game for third place in the LSC South. TSU is 17-30 overall, 9-13 in the LSC South.

DeHoyos, who improved to 6-4 on the season, tied ENMU’s single season strikeout record with his double-digit success against TSU. He now has 83 strikeouts on the season, matching the record established by Greg Stimack (Sr., RHP, Lakewood, CO/J.K. Mullen H.S.) in 1999.

In the win over Tarleton State, DeHoyos did not allow more than one hit in any inning. He walked 2 batters and gave up only 1 earned run. DeHoyos lowered his earned run average to a team-leading 3.72, while recording a team-high sixth complete game. The Hounds scored twice in the first inning of Game #2. With two outs, Andy Hostetler (Jr., OF, Albuquerque, NM/Valley H.S.) and Franco Barrero (So., 1B/3B, Laredo, TX/Laredo J.C.) hit consecutive singles. Hostetler, who stole second base, scored on Barrero’s single.

Luz Leal, Jr. (So., OF/P, Laredo, TX, Alexander Magnet H.S.) pounded a double into left field to score Barrero from first base. Hostetler singled to start the third inning, then stole second base for the second time. He scored later, when Dallas McMann (So., C/DH, Amarillo, TX/Randall H.S.) blasted his fifth home run of the season over the center field fence.

Matt Sulli (Jr., OF, Carlsbad, CA/San Diego Mesa College) added a leadoff homer in the sixth, as the Hounds increased their lead to 5-0. TSU plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Josh Johnson opened the stanza with a double, then stole third.

Following a strikeout, Scott Harrington walked and Byron Anderson drove in Johnson on a fielder’s choice. DeHoyos committed an error on the play, allowing Harrington to reach second. A strikeout and a walk loaded the bases, then Harrington scored on a wild pitch. DeHoyos fanned Matt Thaler to register his third strikeout of the inning. Neither team scored in the seventh, as both squads sent just three batters to the plate. E

NMU finished with 11 hits, led by McMann and Sulli, who went 2 for 3, and by Hostetler, who was 2 for 4. Johnson was the only player with more than one hit for TSU. He was 2 for 4.

In addition to homers by McMann and Sulli, the Greyhounds received doubles from Leal, Steven Romano (So., 3B, Las Cruces, NM/Onate H.S.), and Kyle Wagner (Fr., OF, Carlsbad, NM/ Carlsbad H.S.). Johnson’s double, and a triple by Brian Hill, were TSU’s only extra-base hits of the game. McMann also went 2 for 3 in the first game. He doubled and scored in the first inning after Jeff Zipser (Sr., 2B, Las Vegas, NV/Victor Valley College) drove in David Jones (Sr., CF/SS, Sierra Vista, AZ/Eastern Arizona College) with a double. Zipser advanced one base on McMann’s hit, then scored on a ground out by Barrero. McMann scored on a single up the middle by Ryan Dickson (Jr., 1B/DH, Trail, BC/Big Bend C.C.).

A run in the bottom of the first inning and three runs in the second inning moved Tarleton State in front, 4-3. Shaun Shiery hit an RBI single in the first, and Anderson provided an RBI single in the second. The other second-inning runs scored on a fielding error when Harrington hit a grounder to shortstop.

Tarleton State received back-to-back homers from Harrington and Anderson in the fourth inning. Harrington’s 2-run shot to left field and Anderson’s solo blast down the left field line turned the Texans’ one-run lead into a 7-3 advantage. ENMU tallied one run in the top of the fifth, when McMann walked with one out, reached second and third on singles by Barrero and Dickson, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Sulli.

The final run of the game was scored by Anderson. He singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning. Shiery, who finished 2 for 3 for TSU, doubled during the inning.

Anderson led the Texans with 3 hits in 4 at bats in the opener. He scored twice and drove in 2 runs. Noel Sauceda was 2 for 2 with a run scored and 2 walks for TSU, while Dickson was 2 for 2 with an RBI and a walk for the Greyhounds.

Brian Platts improved to 6-4 with the pitching victory for Tarleton State. He struck out 5 batters and allowed 2 walks. Starting pitcher Chris Stewart (Sr., LHP/OF, Albuquerque, NM/ Manzano H.S.) threw the first three innings for ENMU and dropped to 2-5 with the loss.

Eastern’s game with the Texans on Saturday will conclude the season for the Greyhounds. First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m. (MDT).
