ENMU (#24) DEFEATS CENTRAL OKLAHOMA, 7-2
PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University, ranked #24 in NCAA Division II, won five of six singles flights on its way to a 7-2 victory over the University of Central Oklahoma, Apr. 4 at the Portales City Tennis Courts. With the win, ENMU improved to 5-3 in dual matches this season, while UCO fell to 10-7.

Layla Turner (Jr., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.), ranked #16 in NCAA Division II, led the way with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at #1 singles over 48th-ranked Marina Erchova of UCO. Turner upped her singles record to 16-3 on the season.

The only 3-set match of the day was at #3 singles, won by Lisa Weinman (So., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) of ENMU, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, over Stephanie Johns. Other winners for the Zias in singles competition were Bethanie Nix (Spring, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) at #3 singles, Sarah Pennington (Jr., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) at #5 singles, and Sarah Salazar (So., Belen, NM/Saint Pius X H.S.) at #6 singles.

The Bronchos’ only singles victory came at #4 singles, where Jennifer Jones defeated Ananda Kautz (Fr., Rio de Janeiro, BRA/ Pleasant Valley H.S., CA), 6-4, 6-2. The Zias won two of three doubles flights. At #1 doubles, Turner and Nix edged Erchova and Johns, 9-7. Turner and Nix built a 7-2 lead, but UCO’s team rallied to tie the match at 7-7.

ENMU won the next two games to avoid a tie-breaker. At #2 doubles, Weinman and Pennington routed Christy Jones and Woodard, 8-0. Central Oklahoma won #3 doubles, as Frick and Jennifer Jones slipped past Kautz and Salazar, 8-6.

Eastern New Mexico does not play again until Thursday, Apr. 12, at the University of Central Oklahoma Broncho Invitational. Teams play each other in dual matches during the tournament, which continues through Saturday, Apr. 14.
