ENMU (#24) DEFEATS MIDWESTERN STATE (#18), 5-4
WICHITA FALLS, TX — Eastern New Mexico University won two of three doubles flights from Midwestern State University, then split the six singles flights, as the 24th-ranked Zias defeated the 18th-ranked Indians, 5-4, March 31 in Wichita Falls, Texas.

The win avenged a 5-4 loss to MSU in Wichita Falls, Mar. 9, and improved the Zias to 4-3 on the season. Midwestern State lost for the first time this season, and fell to 10-1 overall.

The Zias won #1 doubles and #2 doubles to take an early 2-1 lead. Layla Turner (Jr., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) and Bethanie Nix (Fr., Spring, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) defeated Marsha Meyer and Marci Matthews at #1 doubles, 8-2. Turner and Nix are ranked #22 nationally in NCAA Division II in doubles.

Lisa Weinman (So., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) and Sarah Pennington (Jr., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) won #2 doubles, 8-6, over Brooke Gray and Emilee Black. ENMU won the top three singles flights. Turner defeated Gray at #1 singles, 6-0, 6-2, and Weinman defeated Matthews at #2 singles, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).

Nix won #3 singles over Meyer, 6-3, 6-0. Black of MSU won #4 singles over Ananda Kautz (Fr., Rio de Janeiro, BRA/Pleasant Valley H.S., CA), 6-4, 7-5, to improve to 14-1 for the Indians. MSU also won #5 singles and #6 singles, as Sarah Butler downed Pennington in the #5 flight, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, and Jennifer Hays defeated Sarah Salazar in the #6 flight, 6-0, 6-1.

Eastern New Mexico returns to action on Wednesday, Apr. 4, when the Zias host Central Oklahoma. Action at the Portales City Tennis Courts is set to get underway at 1:00 p.m. (MST).
