CALE SANDERS AND JOSE MARTINEZ NAMED 2ND
TEAM ALL-WEST REGION BY "D2FOOTBALL.COM"
PORTALES, NM — Two Eastern New Mexico University football players, junior wide receiver Cale Sanders (Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.) and sophomore offensive guard Jose Martinez (Artesia, NM/Artesia H.S.), have been named Second Team All-West Region for NCAA Division II as selected by “D2football.com”. Sanders and Martinez helped ENMU achieve a 6-4 overall record this past season.

Cale SandersSanders led the Eastern offense with 48 catches for 948 yards and 6 touchdowns. He also carried the ball 6 times for 82 yards and 1 touchdown, and completed his only pass attempt of the season for a 37-yard gain. Sanders returned 29 punts for 306 yards (10.6 average) and 2 touchdowns. He led the Greyhounds in overall scoring with 9 touchdowns and 56 points.

In his three years at ENMU, Sanders has caught 82 passes for 1,629 yards and 12 TDs. He has gained an average of 19.9 yards per reception. He has provided ENMU with 16 career touchdowns overall (12 receiving, 2 rushing, 2 punt returns).

Jose MartinezMartinez was a leader in the ENMU offensive line. He helped the Greyhounds gain 233.6 rushing yards and 365.5 total yards per game. He was a key reason ENMU led the Lone Star Conference with 31 rushing touchdowns. He also contributed to the passing game, helping Eastern score 9 passing touchdowns and average 131.9 passing yards per game.

Martinez has played in 19 games, including 13 starts, the past two seasons. He was a redshirt in 1999. This year, he helped the Greyhounds set a school record with 318 points in 10 games. The old record was 317 points scored during an 11-game schedule in 1985.

Both Sanders and Martinez were named First Team All-LSC South at the conclusion of the season. Sanders was previously chosen Honorable Mention All LSC South in 2000.
ENMU opened the 2001 season with a 4-0 record, but lost 4 of its next 5 games before ending the season with a 41-27 victory over West Texas A&M University in the 15th Wagon Wheel game. The Greyhounds finished 2-4 in the LSC South (5th place tie). The Greyhounds are 28-14 overall during the past four seasons.
