CAMERON PULLS AWAY FROM ENMU, 65-44
Lady Aggies Outscore Zias 28-7 over Final 10:00
LAWTON, OK — Cameron University outscored Eastern New Mexico University, 28-7, over the final 10:00 as the Lady Aggies broke a 37-37 tie on their way to a 65-44 victory over the Zias, Dec. 3 in a Lone Star Conference crossover game. Cameron improved to 6-1 on the season, while Eastern New Mexico fell to 1-4, including 0-4 away from Greyhound Arena.

The Lady Aggies connected on just 3 of 20 field goals (15.0%) in the first half, but sank 51.9% of their shots (14 of 27) in the second half. ENMU, which shot 38.1% (8 of 21) in the opening stanza, slipped to 25.9% (7 of 27) in the second half. CU converted 28 of 34 free throws, including 16 of 22 in the first half and 12 of 12 in the second half. Eastern was 13 of 18 at the free throw line during the game.

The Zias led 23-22 at halftime, but trailed 7-2 after the first 5:24. ENMU tied the game at 9-9 on a field goal by Juliana Morrison (So., G/F, Amarillo, TX/Palo Duro H.S.) with 11:27 on the clock, then moved in front 11-9 on a basket by Monica Trimble (Jr., Post, Amarillo, TX/South Plains College) at the 10:49 mark.

Eastern increased its lead to six points, 17-11, with 3:31 remaining in the half, but Cameron went on a 10-3 run for a 21-20 lead at the 1:20 mark. The Zias tied the score on a free throw by Trimble with 35 seconds left, and regained the lead on a free throw by Valencia Rollins (Jr., Long Beach, CA/Western Wyoming) with 5 seconds left.

Cameron opened the second half with another run, as the Lady Aggies outscored ENMU 9-2 over the first 4:00 for a 31-25 advantage. Eastern eventually tied Cameron, 37-37, when Morrison sank a field goal with 10:10 to go. CU led 39-38 with 9:16 left, then scored eight straight points for a 47-38 lead at the 5:54 mark.

The Lady Aggies continued to pull away, and led 62-42 before a pair of free throws by Rollins resulted in Eastern’s final points with 1:04 remaining. Reserve forward Electa Hare of Cameron completed the scoring on a 3-point basket with 11 seconds left.

Melshika Bowman, a 6’3” senior center for Cameron, recorded a game-high 20 points. She also hauled down 8 rebounds and blocked 2 shots.Signy Hermannsdottir, a 6’2” junior center from Reykjavik, Iceland, added 11 points and 2 blocked shots for the Lady Aggies. Kelsi Bond, Rachel Bacon and Kimberle Woods each scored 8 points.

ENMU received 15 points from Morrison, who connected on 6 of 12 field goals and 3 of 4 free throws. She also supplied 2 assists and 4 steals. Trimble contributed 8 points, 5 boards and 3 steals. The Zias’ top two scorers entering the game, Jill Stout (So., G, Sudan, TX/Sudan H.S.) and Tia Doss (Fr., F, Albuquerque, NM/Highland H.S.) tallied just 2 points each. Doss picked up her second foul four minutes into the game, and battled foul trouble all night. She fouled out with 3:11 remaining in the game, after playing less than five minutes overall.

Cameron achieved 15 steals, and forced 27 turnovers by ENMU. The Lady Aggies scored 23 points off turnovers, while Eastern tallied 10 points off Cameron’s 21 turnovers. ENMU will play its second home game of the season on Thursday, Dec. 6, when the Zias host Midwestern State University in an LSC crossover game.

Tipoff at Greyhound Arena is set for 6:00 p.m. (MST). Eastern defeated New Mexico Highlands University, 70-61, on Nov. 26, in the Zias' only home game. The ENMU men’s basketball team will also host Midwestern State on Dec. 6. Game time for the Greyhounds against the Indians is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. (MST).
