LUBBOCK, TX — Junior pitcher Gabe DeHoyos (Artesia, NM/Trinidad J.C.) pitched a complete-game, 3-hit shutout and the Eastern New Mexico University offense pounded out 17 hits, as the Greyhounds defeated host Lubbock Christian University, 11-0, Feb. 10 at the Broken Bat Tournament in Lubbock, Texas.

With the win, ENMU upped its overall record to 3-3 (2-0 Broken Bat). LCU fell to 2-4 overall (0-2 Broken Bat).

The ENMU offense exploded for 11 runs and 17 hits -- all singles -- against the Chaparrals. Matt Sulli (Jr., LF, Carlsbad, CA/San Diego Mesa College) and Jeff Zipser (Sr., 2B, Las Vegas, NV/Victor Valley College) led the way with 3 hits apiece. Sulli was 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored. Zipser went 3 for 4 with 1 run and 3 RBIs.

The Greyhounds struck a decisive blow in the top of the second inning by scoring 6 runs on 5 hits. Zipser and Dickson each drove in two runs, with Barrero and Hostetler providing one RBI apiece. ENMU sent 10 batters to the plate during the inning.

ENMU added one run in the fourth and two more in the fifth for a 9-0 advantage. Hostetler singled and scored on a hit by Steven Romano (So., 3B, Las Cruces, NM/Onate H.S.) in the fourth. In the fifth, Barrero and Sulli scored for the Greyhounds. Kelly Crosby hit a one-out double for LCU in the sixth inning. Crosby also stole third base. DeHoyos kept the shutout intact by forcing a fly out and a ground out to end the inning.

The Hounds plated the two runs in the seventh. Sulli singled with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a hit by Zipser. Hostetler reached base on a fielder’s choice, and later scored on a hit by Eddie Jimenez (Sr., 3B/2B, Tucumcari, NM/N.M. Mil. Inst.).

ENMU and LCU will meet again on Monday, Feb. 12, when the tournament, featuring only wooden bats, resumes. The Hounds and the Chaps will play at 9:00 a.m. (MST). ENMU will also play at 11:30 p.m. (MST) against Wayland Baptist University.
