ANGELO STATE TAKES 74-66 WIN OVER ENMU
Greyhounds Battle, but Fall to LSC South Leader
PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University gave Lone Star Conference South Division leader Angelo State University a tremendous battle on Thursday, Feb. 15, but the Greyhounds were unable to pull off an upset, as ASU defeated ENMU, 74-66, at Greyhound Arena. The Rams improved to 18-5 on the season, including 9-0 in the LSC South. Eastern New Mexico dropped to 4-19, 1-8 in the LSC South.

ENMU led 36-34 at halftime, and the Greyhounds trailed by just four points, 52-48, with 10:39 remaining in the game. Angelo State went on an 8-2 run to increase their lead to 60-50, but the Rams were unable to put ENMU away.

Eastern matched ASU on the scoreboard over the next eight minutes, and trailed 68-58 at the 2:32 mark. Rudy Charles (Fr., G, Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) hit a layup with 2:21 left, and Kevin Iverson (Jr., G/F, Chicago, IL/Elgin C.C.) added another layup with 1:42 to go, as the Hounds pulled within 68-62. Darwin Carter made the second of two free throws with 1:39 left, giving ASU a 7-point lead. Charles answered with a jumper at the 1:09 mark, cutting the deficit to 69-64.

The shot clock was inside six seconds on ASU’s next possession when Justin Hardin scored underneath the basket with 37 seconds left. Iverson put in a basket with 33 seconds on the clock to cut the score to 71-66, but ENMU was unable to complete the rally.

Charles and Iverson led Eastern’s upset bid with 18 points apiece. Charles added 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. He committed one turnover in 34 minutes played. Iverson went 7 of 11 from the field, grabbed 4 rebounds and earned 3 steals. Brenton Robinson (Jr., C/F, Tucson, AZ/ Central Arizona) contributed 12 points and 7 boards. He scored all 12 points in the first half.

For ASU, James Gray and Darwin Carter each scored 20 points. Gray also provided 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Carter converted 7 of 13 from the field and 5 of 9 on three-pointers.

Tyree Williams made 7 of 11 field goals on his way to 17 points and 5 boards. ENMU shot 45.0% for the game (27 of 60), while ASU connected on 50.9% of its shots (29 of 57). The Rams were 7 of 20 on 3-pointers, while ENMU sank just 1 of 5 3-point shots.

The Greyhounds return to action on Saturday, Feb. 17, when they host Abilene Christian in an LSC South contest. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m. (MST). ENMU defeated ACU, 67-66, in Abilene, Texas, on Jan. 18.
