RAMBELLES HOLD OFF ZIAS FOR 76-68 WIN
PORTALES, NM — Angelo State University led by 10 points at halftime, then held off Eastern New Mexico University, 76-68, in a Lone Star Conference game, Feb. 15 at Greyhound Arena.

The Rambelles upped their overall record to 17-6, and remained tied with Texas A&M University-Kingsville for the LSC South lead at 9-2. ENMU fell to 7-14 on the season and to 3-7 in the LSC South.

ENMU held a 3-point lead, 21-18, with 6:57 left in the first half, but Angelo State followed with a 19-4 run. The Rambelles led 37-25 heading into the final minute of the half. Brandi Bates (Sr., G/F, Plainview, TX/Plainview H.S.) sank a layup for ENMU with 35 seconds left to cut the lead to 10 points.

The teams both scored five points during the first 1:35 of the second half, then ENMU went on a 9-0 run. When Jody Avent (Sr., G, Stinnett, TX/South Plains College) converted a free throw to complete the run with 16:32 left, the Zias trailed by a single point, 42-41.

ENMU never took the lead the rest of the way, but the Zias were within a single point again, 44-43, with 15:18 remaining, and trailed by just four points, 65-61, at the 4:41 mark.

Angelo State scored 7 of the next 9 points for a 72-63 lead. The Zias, on a layup by Breanne Baker (Sr., F/P, Sudan, TX/Sudan H.S.) with 1:43 left and a free throw by Baker with 1:08 remaining, pulled to within six points, 72-66. ASU secured the win with two free throws each from Kami Williams and Kelli Anne Goble in the final minute.

Williamson led four Rambelles in double figures. She scored 16 points and converted 4 of 6 three-point field goals. Marloes Roetgerink and Goble each added 13 points, while Kylie Nabors contributed 11 points. Roetgerink also grabbed 9 rebounds for ASU.

Avent scored a career-high 23 points to spearhead ENMU’s offense. She was 10 of 11 at the line, and hit 3 of 4 three-point shots. She also recorded 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal. Bates finished with 12 points, while sinking 6 of 9 field goals and earning 8 rebounds.

Lenni Hartley (Sr., G/F, Roy, NM/Roy H.S.) provided a solid game . She scored 5 points, recorded 9 rebounds and dished out 5 assists. Baker tallied 5 points and hauled down 7 boards. Katheryne Hickman (Sr., F, San Antonio, TX/Castle Hills Baptist H.S.), ENMU’s leading scorer for the season (17.4 avg.), was held to 8 points and 3 boards. Hickman has scored 1,150 career points.

ENMU remains at home to host Abilene Christian University in an LSC South game on Saturday, Feb. 17. Game time at Greyhound Arena is slated for 6:00 p.m. (MST).
