PORTALES, NM — Senior forward Peter Kiganya scored 16 points and grabbed 22 rebounds to lead Abilene Christian University to a 62-49 victory over Eastern New Mexico University, in a Lone Star Conference game, Feb. 17 at Greyhound Arena.

The win allowed ACU to avenge a 67-66 loss Jan. 18 in Abilene, and also pulled the Wildcats out of a tie with the Greyhounds for last place in the LSC South. ACU improved to 6-18 overall, 2-8 in the conference, while ENMU fell to 4-20, 1-9 in the LSC.

In addition to leading the Wildcats in points and rebounds, Kiganya provided a team-high 4 assists. He also blocked 1 shot. Joining Kiganya in double figures for Abilene Christian was Howard Johnson, with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Jimmy Taylor added 8 points and 13 rebounds and 3 assists.

ENMU started the second half with an 8-2 run that pulled the Greyhounds within 4 points of the Wildcats, 35-31. The Hounds were just 5 points back, 40-35, after Rudy Charles (Fr., G, Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) converted a 4-point play with 11:53 remaining. The Wildcats gradually increased their lead to a 14-point advantage, 53-29, with 5:22 left.

Two field goals by Charles and two free throws by Brandon Ridenour (Sr., G, Lovington, NM New Mexico J.C.) rallied ENMU back within eight points, 53-45, at the 3:13 mark. Neither team scored again until Kiganya sank a layup and a foul shot with 2:05 left. His 3-point play gave ACU a 56-45 lead.

The Wildcats added 6 of 6 free throws in the final 1:32. ENMU played the final six minutes of the first half and all of the second half without Kevin Iverson (Jr., G/F, Chicago, IL/Elgin C.C.), who left the game after sustaining an injury to his eye and/or cheek.

Iverson entered the game tied with Charles for Eastern’s scoring lead with 14.3 points per game. Charles finished with a team-high 20 points, after scoring 18 in the second half. Garland Coleman (Fr., G/F, Chicago, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) added 10 points and 4 assists. Brenton Robinson (Jr., F/C, Tucson, AZ/Central Arizona) produced 6 points and 8 rebounds.
