(Ranked #8) SHUTS OUT WNMU 9-0 ENMU recorded straight set victories in five singles flights and the top two doubles flights. The Zias also won #6 singles and #3 doubles by default, because WNMU fielded just five players. Layla Turner (Jr., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.), ranked #4 in NCAA Division II in singles, led the way with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Rosie Gomez at #1 singles. Lisa Weinman (So., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) won #2 singles, defeating Jeanette Duenas, 6-2, 6-4. Bethanie Nix defeated Monica Martinez at #3 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Ananda Kautz (Fr., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Pleasant Valley H.S., CA) won her first ever collegiate match, defeating Liz Castillo 6-0, 6-0 at #4 singles in about 25 minutes. Sarah Pennington (Jr., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) won #5 singles, 6-0, 6-1, over Whitney Daniel. Eastern New Mexico’s top doubles team of Turner and Nix, ranked #13, defeated WNMU’s #1 doubles team of Gomez and Duenas, 8-3. Weinman and Pennington combined to defeat Martinez and Castillo, 8-4, at #2 doubles. ENMU returns to action next Saturday (Feb. 24) when the Zias travel to Abilene, Texas, to take on defending Lone Star Conference champion Abilene Christian at 8:00 a.m. (MST). The Zias will also play Tarleton State University in Abilene, with the second match getting underway at 1:00 p.m. (MST). Last year, ENMU took second place in the LSC, as the Zias lost to ACU, 5-0, in the LSC Tournament championship match. |
