GREYHOUNDS DROP DOUBLE-HEADER
AT COLLEGE OF THE SOUTHWEST
HOBBS, NM — College of the Southwest edged Eastern New Mexico University 9-8 and 2-1 to sweep a non-conference double-header, Feb. 20 in Hobbs, N.M. ENMU fell to 5-8, with 7 of the 8 losses by one run or in extra innings.

In the opener, CSW overcame home runs by David Jones (Sr., SS/OF, Sierra Vista, AZ/ Eastern Arizona College) and Dallas McMann (So., C, Amarillo, TX/Randall H.S.) of ENMU. Jones hit a 3-run homer and McMann added a 2-run shot. CSW, however, outhit ENMU 11-7.

ENMU pitcher Greg Stimack (Sr., RHP, Lakewood, CO/J.K. Mullen H.S.), who missed all of last season due to a broken humerus (upper arm) and a full rotator cuff tear, made his first start since returning from the injury. Stimack previously made two relief appearances this season. Against CSW, he pitched 4 innings, allowed 8 hits, and gave up 5 runs (4 earned).

Relief pitcher Cory Barker (Sr., RHP, Kelseyville, CA/Mendicino J.C.) took the loss after giving up 4 runs in the fifth inning. He fell to 1-1 on the season. Gabe Estrada (Jr., RHP, Jal, NM/New Mexico J.C.) threw just 12 pitches — all strikes — for ENMU in the sixth. Clint Hook earned the win for CSW.

In the second game, the Mustangs won a pitching duel. Sean McMullan threw a complete game, and allowed just 6 hits. ENMU freshman Ryan Hess (RHP, Surrey, BC, Langley Fine Arts School) gave up 7 hits and 2 walks, while earning 1 strikeout. McMullan recorded the win, while Hess dropped to 0-1.

McMullan’s success was temporarily pushed aside by Franco Barrero (So., 1B/3B, Laredo, TX/Laredo J.C.). Barrero hit a leadoff homer in the fourth inning to score Eastern’s only run, but the Hounds were unable to score again.

Eastern New Mexico returns to Lone Star Conference action this weekend, when they play a 3-game series against South Division rival Abilene Christian University. Game time for the opening 9-inning game is set for 6:00 p.m. (MST) on Friday, Feb. 23. The teams will also play a pair of 7-inning games on Saturday, Feb. 24, starting at 11:00 a.m.
