ABILENE
CHRISTIAN DEFEATS ENMU Eastern’s top singles player, Layla Turner (Jr., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.), ranked #4 in NCAA Division II, defeated Sarah Taweel, ranked #27, in straight sets at #1 singles. The opening set was very close, but Turner prevailed 7-6 after winning a tie-breaker, 7-5. Turner went on to win the second set, 6-2. Leah Ticer of ACU led the Wildcats by defeating Lisa Weinman (So., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.), 6-0, 6-0 at #2 singles. Ticer also teamed with Andi Wildner to defeat Turner and Bethanie Nix (Fr., Spring, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) in #1 doubles, 8-4. Nix was involved in a three-set match at #3 singles. She lost the first set to Lacey Johnson, 6-3, but won the second set, 6-2. Johnson won the match with a 6-2 victory in the third set. All three doubles matches were decided by 8-4 scores, as ACU built an early lead by sweeping the doubles flights. In addition to the win by Ticer and Wildner, the Wildcats also received wins from Johnson and Kristin Chumley at #2 doubles over Weinman and Sarah Pennington (Jr., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.), and from Taweel and Velvet Canada at #3 doubles over Ananda Kautz (Fr., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Pleasant Valley H.S., CA) and Sarah Salazar (So., Belen, NM/Saint Pius X H.S.). ENMU remained in Abilene for a same-day match against Tarleton State University. Match time was originally set for 1:00 p.m. (MST), but was likely postponed due to both of ENMU’s matches being moved to indoor courts. |
