ZIAS DEFEAT TARLETON STATE, 9-0
ABILENE, TX — Eastern New Mexico University swept all six singles flights and all three doubles flights to blank Tarleton State University, 9-0, in a Lone Star Conference women’s tennis match, Feb. 24 in Abilene, Texas. ENMU, ranked #8 nationally in NCAA Division II, improved to 2-1 with the victory.

At #1 singles, Layla Turner (Jr., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) of ENMU, ranked #4 in NCAA Division II, defeated Melissa Haley, 6-0, 6-1. Turner also teamed with doubles partner Bethanie Nix (Fr., Spring, TX/Newman Smith H.S.) to win #1 doubles, 8-0, over TSU’s top doubles team of Amber Hullett and Corey Seward. Sarah Salazar (So., Belen, NM/Saint Pius X H.S.) represented ENMU in the two closest matches against the TexAnns.

Salazar won #6 singles over Valarie Murawka, falling 4-6 in the first set and winning the second set 6-2, before claiming victory in a tie-breaker for the match, 10-7. Salazar and freshman Ananda Kautz (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Pleasant Valley H.S., CA) edged Murawka and Amber Moshier, 9-8 (7-2 tie-breaker), at #3 doubles.

Eastern’s sweep included two quick matches at #4 singles and #5 singles. Kautz was victorious over Kori Reed at #4 singles, earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Sarah Pennington (Jr., Sweetwater, TX/ Sweetwater H.S.) also won 6-1, 6-1 at #5 singles over Moshier. The Zias’ next match is set for Mar. 9 at Midwestern State University.

Match time in Wichita Falls, Texas, is set for 8:00 a.m. (MST). ENMU will also play Northeastern State University the next day (Mar. 10) in Wichita Falls, with the action starting at 8:00 a.m. (MST).
