ENMU ZIAS FALL TO PIONEERS, 54-47
DENTON, TX — Texas Woman’s University held Eastern New Mexico University to 27.3% field goal shooting (18 of 66), as the Pioneers defeated the visiting Zias, 54-47, Feb. 22 in Denton, Texas. It was TWU’s first Lone Star Conference win of the season, improving the Pioneers to 2-23 overall and 1-12 in the LSC South. ENMU, which has battled through several injuries during the season, fell to 8-16, 4-9 in the LSC South.

TWU led, 19-16, at halftime, despite shooting 29.2% (7 of 24). The Pioneers made 3 of 6 3-pointers, and limited Eastern to 22.6% (7 of 31) from the field, to earn the 3-point advantage. In the second half, Texas Woman’s improved to 43.5% (10 of 23) on field goals, while ENMU continued to struggle, connecting on just 11 of 35 shots (31.4%).

Even so, the Zias finished with one more field goal (18 to 17) and one more three-pointer (7 to 6) than TWU, but the Pioneers were 14 of 21 at the free throw line, and ENMU was 4 of 7 at the charity stripe. The Pioneers led 26-16, early in the second half, but the Zias countered with a 19-5 run for a 35-31 lead with 10:31 remaining.

Katheryne Hickman (Sr., F, San Antonio, TX/Castle Hills Baptist H.S.), the team’s top scorer, produced 8 points, including two 3-pointers, during the run. Hickman, held to 5 points in the first half, finished with 22 points, including 6 three-point shots. She has 1,219 career points, and needs 12 points in ENMU’s final game at Tarleton State, on Sat., Feb. 24 (5:00 p.m. MST), to reach 5th place on the Zias’ all-time scoring list.

TWU pulled within a basket at 35-33 , before Hickman gave the Zias a 38-33 lead with another three-pointer at the 8:27 mark. Hickman also sank 3-point shots with 6:55 and 4:07 remaining, giving ENMU leads of 42-37 and 45-42.

The Zias did not score again until Jennifer Dvorak (Sr., G, San Antonio, TX/Madison H.S.) hit a field goal with 38 seconds left. In between, the Pioneers scored 12 consecutive points for a 53-45 lead. Christy Wells and Wendy Bartlett each made a 3-pointer during the run. After Dvorak’s basket cut the margin to 6 points, Jennifer Hall of TWU completed the scoring by sinking one of two free throws with 30 seconds on the clock.

Hickman was ENMU’s only double-digit scorer. She was 8 of 23 form the field, including 6 of 13 on three-point shots. She and grabbed 6 rebounds. Tricia Doherty (Fr., F, Plano, TX/ East H.S.) supplied 6 points and 5 boards in 12 minutes played.

TWU was led by Bartlett, with 22 points. She made 6 of 11 field goal attempts, sank 4 of 6 3-pointers, and earned 6 boards. Julie Murphy added 9 points and Wells grabbed 9 rebounds.
