SPLIT PAIR OF 1-0 GAMES WITH NMSU The Aggies won the first game 1-0 in eight innings, with Melissa Briggs scoring the only run when Ryon Adams hit an infield single toward third base. Martinez recorded the game-winning double in her first collegiate at bat. Senior right fielder Suzy Seitzinger (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield H.S.) scored on the play. Earlier in the inning, Seitzinger reached first on a fielder’s choice, as Maegan Rhoten (Fr., LF/1B, Albuquerque, NM/ St. Pius X H.S.) was forced out at second. Seitzinger scored from first base on Martinez’s hit. ENMU, which opened the season with the double-header, is now 1-1. New Mexico State, which lost a pair of games at Eastern New Mexico last season, moved to 2-4. In the opener, neither team scored until the bottom of the eighth, when NMSU used an error and two singles to push a run across the plate. Briggs led off the inning by reaching second on a two-base outfield error. Briggs advanced to third on a single by Heather Nobbe. ENMU relief pitcher Lauren King (Fr., La Mirada, CA/La Serna H.S.) intentionally walked Amanda Thurmond to load the bases, but Adams followed with the game-winning hit. King, who pitched 2-plus innings in the opener, pitched the first six innings of the nightcap. She finished the day with a 1-1 record, earning both decisions. In eight innings overall, King struck out 6 batters and allowed 3 walks. Dawn Murray (So., P/1B, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) walked the first batter in the seventh, but forced 3 straight outs to earn her first save. Amber Mosher (1-0) of NMSU recorded 3 strikeouts and did not allow a walk, as she pitched a complete game in the opener. Judy Blok (1-1) pitched all 7 innings of the second game. She struck out 5 batters and gave up just 3 hits, while allowing no walks. The Aggies committed 3 errors during the game. Adrian Nobles led NMSU in the first game, with 3 hits in 4 at bats. Tiffany Ruiz added 2 hits in 4 at bats. In the second game, Nobbe was 2 of 3, earning all but one of the Aggies’ hits. No one had more than one hit in either game for ENMU. Shortstop Jessica Rowley (Jr., Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) went 2 of 5 overall for the Zias. ENMU remains on the road for a double-header at Western New Mexico University on Thursday, Feb. 8. First pitch in Silver City, N.M., is set for 1:00 p.m. (MST). |
