JAVELINAS HOLD OFF GREYHOUNDS, 73-64
Iverson Earns 22 Points, 16 Boards and 5 Assists, as ENMU Almost Completes Second Half Comeback
KINGSVILLE, TX — Texas A&M University-Kingsville built a 34-24 halftime lead, then held off visiting Eastern New Mexico University, Feb. 8, as the Javelinas claimed a 73-64 Lone Star Conference victory.

ENMU, which converted just seven field goals in the first half, sank 16 of 37 second half shots, including 4 of 7 three-pointers. ENMU cut TAMUK’s lead to a single point, 42-41, at the 13:20 mark and trailed by just three points, 64-61, with 2:37 left. The Javelinas ended the game with a 9-3 run. Even so, ENMU trailed by just five points, 69-64, after

Rudy Charles (Fr., G, Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) hit a layup with 31 seconds left. Quincy Sims clinched the win for TAMUK by sinking 4 of 4 free throws the rest of the way.

Kevin Iverson (Jr., G/F, Chicago, IL/Elgin C.C.) spearheaded ENMU’s efforts, scoring 22 points, grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds and providing 5 assists. He also connected on 10 of 12 free throws.

ENMU opened the second half with a 17-8 run. Iverson began the rally by assisting Charles on a layup. Later in the run, Iverson scored on a layup of his own. Melvin Steward (So., F, Seattle, WA/Grand Canyon Univ.) completed the run with another layup that cut the deficit to 42-41.

TAMU-Kingsville countered by scoring 13 of the next 18 points and taking a 55-46 lead with 8:18 remaining. The Greyhounds rallied again, cutting the margin to three points on a 15-9 run that concluded with a 3-pointer by Charles. TAMUK increased the lead to five points on a layup by Kendall Garland, then upped the lead to seven points, 68-61, on a basket by Billy Brewster with 53 seconds left. Sims’ free throws in the final half-minute preserved the lead.

Iverson was one of two players in double figures for ENMU. The other double-digit scorer was Charles, with 10 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds. Garland Coleman (Fr., G/F, Chicago, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) added 9 points and 6 rebounds. Brandon Ridenour (Sr., G, Lovington, NM/New Mexico J.C.) scored 9 points, earned 2 assists and recorded 2 steals.

Brewster topped Texas A&M-Kingsville with 22 points. He was 8 of 11 from the field and 6 of 9 at the line. He grabbed 7 rebounds, produced 4 steals and blocked 2 shots.

Garland contributed 13 points and 5 assists, while James Smith scored 10 points. ENMU will play at Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday, Feb. 10.
