ECU DEFEATS ENMU IN PHYSICAL GAME, 67-57
Teams Combine for 55 Fouls, 72 Free Throw Attempts
ADA, OK — East Central University converted 31 of 44 free throws, as the Lady Tigers won a physical contest with Eastern New Mexico University, 67-57, Jan. 13. at the Kerr Activities Center in Ada, Okla. ECU, from the Lone Star Conference North Division, improved to 7-6 on the season, while the Zias from the LSC South fell to 4-7. Crossover games do not count in the LSC divisional standings.

ENMU and East Central combined for 55 fouls and 72 free throw attempts. The Zias were called for 31 fouls and ECU committed 24 infractions. The Lady Tigers gained a 13-point edge at the free throw line, as ECU’s 31 charity shots outpaced ENMU’s 18 of 28 at the line.

The Lady Tigers placed four players in double figures, led by Stormy Griffith, who made 6 of 8 field goals and 5 of 8 free throws for 17 points. Griffith also grabbed 8 rebounds. Other double-digit scorers for ECU were Randi Wilson with 14 points, Kristy Donathan with 12 points, and Leslie Shores, who tallied 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

ECU held a 27-25 lead at halftime, but ENMU opened the second half with a 3-pointer by Sharon Max (Sr., G/F, Fruitland, NM/Kirtland Central H.S.). The Zias outscored ECU, 6-2, at the start of the half, and held a 31-29 lead with 18:53 left in the game.

The Zias went 5:29 before they scored again, as the Lady Tigers put together an 11-0 run. Griffith converted a three-point play and added two more free throws during the run, while Wilson began the rally with a 3-point basket and Donathan added three points.

After ENMU cut the deficit to 40-33, the Lady Tigers countered with another run, outscoring the Zias 7-2. East Central led by 12 points, 47-35, with 10:50 remaining. The Zias never got closer than five points the rest of the way.

Eleven players score for the Zias, led by Breanne Baker (Sr., P/F, Sudan, TX/Sudan H.S.), who scored 10 points and hauled down 8 rebounds. Max, Jody Avent (Sr., G, Stinnett, TX/ South Plains College) and Tricia Doherty (Fr., F, Plano, TX/East H.S.) each contributed 8 points for the Zias. Katheryne Hickman (Sr., F, San Antonio, TX/Castle Hills Baptist H.S.) scored 7 points and recorded 8 rebounds.

The Zias, with three games left on a five-game road trip — play again on Thurs., Jan. 18 at Abilene Christian University. Game time in Abilene, Texas, is set for 5:00 p.m. (MST).
