WEST TEXAS A&M DEFEATS GREYHOUNDS, 80-61
CANYON, TX — West Texas A&M University surged out to a 40-23 halftime lead, on its way to an 80-61 victory over visiting Eastern New Mexico University, in a Lone Star Conference game, Jan. 23 in Canyon, Texas. WTAMU improved to 10-6 overall, including 2-1 in the LSC South. The Greyhounds dropped to 4-13, 1-2 in the LSC South.

Albert Myles of West Texas led all players with 21 points. He connected on 8 of 10 field goals and sank 5 of 6 free throws. Rich Forrest contributed 13 points and hauled down 10 rebounds, while Murray Estrada added 11 points, including 3 of 5 three-pointers. Matt Madison, who hit a 35-foot three-pointer as the first half expired, finished with 10 points.

ENMU stayed close early in the game, and trailed just 18-16 at the 6:48 mark of the first half. WTAMU scored the next six points on its way to a 16-1 run that make the score 34-17 with 2:20 remaining in the half.

The Greyhounds gradually cut into their 17-point halftime deficit. ENMU reduced the margin to just 8 points, 54-46, with 10:57 left in the game. Freshman guard Rudy Charles (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) scored 11 points during Eastern’s rally.

After ENMU pulled within 8 points, the Buffaloes went on a 8-1 run that increased the lead to 15 points at 62-47. West Texas maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the game.

Charles led Eastern with 19 points, including 10 for 10 at the charity stripe. Brenton Robinson (Jr., F/C, Tucson, AZ/Central Arizona) supplied 10 points, while Rob McCaskill (Sr., F/C, Greenwood, MS/North Lake C.C.) provided 8 points and 2 assists. Melvin Steward (So., F, Seattle, WA/Grand Canyon University) scored 6 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.

ENMU went 1-4 on its 5-game road trip before returning to Portales, N.M., for the start of a 3-game homestand. ENMU will open the homestand on Thursday, Jan. 25 against Tarleton State University at Greyhound Arena at 8:00 p.m. (MST). The Hounds also host Texas A&M University-Commerce on Thursday, Feb. 1 and take on Texas A&M University-Kingsville on Saturday, Feb. 3.
