TARLETON STATE DEFEATS ENMU, 64-53
Rudy Charles Scores 18 for Greyhounds in Loss
PORTALES, NM — Brandon Burney, who sank just 1 of 7 shots in the first half, converted 6 of 8 field goals in the second half, including 5 of 7 three-pointers, as Tarleton State University defeated Eastern New Mexico University, 64-53, Jan. 25 at Greyhound Arena.

The Lone Star Conference South Division victory improved the Texans to 10-7 on the season, including 2-1 in the LSC. Eastern New Mexico fell to 4-14 overall, 1-3 in the LSC.

ENMU led 20-11 with 11:29 left in the first half. The Greyhounds did not score again until Kevin Iverson (Jr., G, Chicago, IL/Elgin C.C.) sank two free throws with 6:40 remaining in the period to give ENMU a 21-17 lead. The Greyhounds also led 24-17, but the Texans countered with a 10-0 run for a 3-point lead late in the half.

Eastern’s Nick Gerard (Fr., F, Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho H.S.) hit a jump shot at the buzzer to pull ENMU within a single point, 27-26, at the break. With Burney leading the way, Tarleton State shot 59.3% (16 of 27) in the second half, after converting just 32.1% in the first half (9 of 28).

TSU opened the final 20 minutes with a 14-8 run for a 41-34 lead. The Texans were in front 50-43 at the 11:26 mark, then embarked on a 12-6 run for a 13-point lead, 62-49, with 6:34 to go. TSU attempted 55 field goals during for the game, while ENMU managed just 37 shots. TSU also hauled down 16 offensive rebounds and held the Greyhounds to 9 offensive boards.

Burney’s 20-point effort paced the Texans. Greg Manderson, with 11 points, and Kevin Kuhl, with 10 points, also reached double figures. Burney was 7 of 15 from the field and 6 of 11 from behind the 3-point arc. The Texans were 8 of 22 on 3-point attempts overall. Kuhl led the Texans with 6 rebounds. Burney and Collat Johnson each grabbed 5 carems.

Rudy Charles (Fr., G, Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) topped ENMU with 18 points. He converted 6 of 9 field goals, including 3 of 3 on three-point shots. He also registered 5 rebounds and recorded 2 assists in 24 minutes. Iverson provided 12 points and 6 boards.

Zach Bullock (Fr., F/C, Fairbanks, AK/North Pole H.S.), who had seen only limited action since early December due to a back injury, scored 9 points on 4 of 5 shooting. He played 21 minutes.

The Greyhounds are off for a week before returning to LSC South Division action on Thursday, Feb. 1, when they host Texas A&M University-Commerce. Game time at Greyhound Arena is slated for 8:00 p.m. (MST).
