NORTHEASTERN STATE DEFEATS ZIAS, 7-2
WICHITA FALLS, TX — Northeastern State University (Okla.), ranked #19 in NCAA Division II, won five singles flights on its way to a 7-2 victory over 10th-ranked Eastern New Mexico University, Mar. 10 in Wichita Falls, Texas. The Lone Star Conference match was played at Midwestern State University. ENMU fell to 2-3 on the season.

Maite Vila of NSU, ranked #15 in Division II, won the featured match of the day, defeating Eastern’s Layla Turner, ranked #4, in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. NSU won four singles flights in straight sets, but Ananda Kautz (Fr., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Pleasant Valley H.S., CA) of ENMU was victorious at #4 singles, as she outlasted Jennifer McKenzie, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Vila and teammate Evelina Akkers, ranked #5 in NCAA Division II, won #1 doubles over Turner and Bethanie Nix (Fr., Spring, TX/Newman Smith H.S.), ranked #13, 8-2. ENMU won #2 doubles, with Lisa Weinman (So., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.) and Sarah Salazar (So., Belen, NM/St. Pius X H.S.) defeating McKenzie and Jennie Howard, 8-5.

The Lady Reds were victorious at #3 doubles, as Katarina Djuric and Maja Nesic downed Kautz and Betsy Cata (Jr., Espanola, NM/Espanola Valley H.S.), 8-4. Salazar filled in for Sarah Pennington (Jr., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) at #2 doubles and #5 singles. Pennington missed the match due to a strained ligament near her achilles tendon. Cata also helped out, replacing Salazar at #6 singles and #3 doubles.

The Zias are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, Mar. 17 against West Texas A&M and Fort Hays State University. Both matches will be played at the Portales City Tennis Courts, with ENMU taking on WTAMU at 10:00 a.m. (MST) followed by the Zias against Fort Hays State at 2:00 p.m. (MST).
