ENMU DEFEATS TARLETON STATE, 8-1
STEPHENVILLE, TX — Eastern New Mexico University swept all three doubles flights and won five of six singles flights to defeat Tarleton State University, 8-1, in a Lone Star Conference women’s tennis match, Friday, Mar. 30. ENMU, which defeated TSU 9-0 earlier this spring, improved to 3-3 overall. The Zias are ranked #24 in NCAA Division II. Tarleton State fell to 3-6 on the season.

Layla Turner (Jr., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.), ranked #16 nationally in NCAA Division II, won #1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, over Amber Hullett. Turner and Bethanie Nix (Fr., Spring, TX/ Newman Smith H.S.), ranked #22 nationally in doubles, shut out Hullett and Corey Seward at #1 doubles, 8-0. Nix also won #3 singles, defeating Seward in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.

Tarleton State’s only win came at #2 singles, where Melissa Haley defeated Lisa Weinman (So., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa H.S.), 6-2, 6-2. Weinman and Sarah Pennington (Jr., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) defeated Haley and Keri Reed, 8-3, in the #2 doubles match. Sarah Salazar (So., Belen, NM/St. Pius X H.S.) played in the day’s two closest matches. She teamed with Ananda Kautz (Fr., Rio de Janeiro, BRA/Pleasant Valley H.S., CA) to edge Valerie Murawka and Amber Mosher, 8-6, at #3 doubles. She also defeated Mosher at #6 singles, winning a 7-5 battle in the first set, then taking the second set, 6-0.

ENMU remains on the road for another LSC match on Saturday, Mar. 31 at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. Match time is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. (MST).
