HARRER’S PITCHING, REMPP’S 3-RUN HOMER LEAD ZIAS PAST KINGSVILLE IN 2ND GAME
Zias and 19th-Ranked Lady Javelinas Split Double-Header
PORTALES, NMJennifer Harrer (Sr., RHP, Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian H.S.) threw a 3-hitter, and catcher Sarah Rempp (Sr., Marshalltown, IA/Greeley Central H.S., CO) hit a 3-run homer, as Eastern New Mexico defeated 19th-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville, 4-0, in the second game of a Lone Star Conference double-header, Mar. 30 at Zia Softball Field.

The teams split the double-header, with TAMU-Kingsville winning the first game, 11-2. TAMUK, ranked #4 in the South Central Region of NCAA Division II, moved to 23-7 on the season and 1-1 in the LSC South. Eastern New Mexico, ranked #6 in the South Central Region, moved to 18-7-1 overall, 2-2 in the LSC South.

Harrer gave up no extra-base hits in Eastern’s victory. She registered 8 strikeouts and walked just 1 batter, to improve to 10-4. She retired TAMUK in order in 5 of the 7 innings. The best scoring chance for the Lady Javelinas came in the third inning, with the score still 0-0. Jennifer Moffett singled to right to start the inning, then Harrer recorded back-to-back strikeouts.

Lesley Zambrano followed with a single down the third base line, advancing Moffett to second. Moffett also moved to third on a throwing error by Harrer. Mariana Casarez walked to load the bases, but Sarah Norman fouled to Rempp, and the game remained scoreless.

ENMU broke the deadlock with 4 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jessica Rowley (Jr., SS, Dallas, OR/Clackamas C.C.) hit a bunt single with one out, then scored the game’s first run on a double by Rachel Mohler (Jr., 3B, Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.) that went through the right side of the infield and was retrieved near the outfield fence. Maegan Rhoten’s (Fr., OF/P, Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X H.S.) ball up the middle deflected off pitcher Amanda Reed for a single.

With runners at first and third, Rempp hit her second homer of the season over the right field fence. Harrer gave up a one-out single to Casarez in the sixth, but retired the next two batters on a fly out and a strikeout. She forced a fly out and two ground outs to quickly end the game in the top of the seventh.

In the opener, Reed hit a solo homer in the fifth inning and Zambrano added a solo homer in the sixth inning, helping TAMU-Kingsville turn a 3-0 lead after three innings into an 11-2 win.

The Lady Javelinas earned just 3 hits in the first four innings, but finished with 12 hits for the game. Harrer started the game for ENMU, but was hit on the right shin by a grounder from Zambrano in the top of the fourth inning. The ball ricochetted to first baseman Dawn Murray (So., 1B/P, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.), who recorded the out at first base. Harrer finished the inning, but missed the rest of the game.

TAMUK scored three runs — two were unearned — off Harrer in the third inning. Michelle Bartch and Zambrano singled to open the stanza. Sarah Norman then reached first when a fly ball was misplayed in center field, allowing Bartch to score. Tara Turk drove in Zambrano with a single to left field, then advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Harrer struck out Reed and Moffett, but walked Tracy Guadarrama and hit Shawna Lawless with a pitch to force in the third run.

The Lady Javelinas added three runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and four in the seventh to increase their lead to 11-0. Reed’s homer to center field and Wendy Wagster’s 2-run single to left field provided the runs in the fifth. Zambrano homered to right field an inning later, then pinch-hitter Joanna Garcia and Bartch hit RBI singles, and Norman blasted a 2-run double to right center, to complete TAMUK’s scoring in the seventh.

Both of ENMU’s runs scored on a homer by Rhoten with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Rowley, who reached on an error, also scored on the play. It was Rhoten’s 5th home run of the season. Maria Gutierrez threw a complete-game 5-hitter for Kingsville. She struck out 8 Zias and gave up just 1 walk. She improved to 12-3 on the season. Harrer took the loss for ENMU. She earned 7 strikeouts and walked 3 batters.

Reliever Lauren King produced 3 strikeouts in three innings. She allowed 8 runs (4 unearned) and did not walk a single batter. Mohler and Rempp each went 3 of 6 during the double-header for ENMU. Zambrano was 3 for 7 on the day for TAMU-Kingsville.

The Zias and the Lady Javelinas will play another double-header on Saturday, Mar. 31. First pitch in the opening game is set for 12:00 noon (MST) at Zia Softball Field.
