DeHOYOS THROWS COMPLETE-GAME 5-HITTER Greyhounds Split Double-Header with Javelinas
PORTALES, NM — Junior pitcher Gabe DeHoyos (RHP, Artesia, NM/Trinidad J.C.) of Eastern New Mexico University threw a complete-game 5-hitter, and the Greyhounds pounded out 16 hits, to defeat Texas A&M-Kingsville, 7-3, in the second game of a Lone Star Conference double-header, Mar. 3, at Greyhound Field. TAMU-Kingsville won the first game, 10-7, as Brian Berry went 3 for 4 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs. ENMU is 9-11, 4-4 LSC South and TAMUK is 10-11, 2-3 LSC South.

DeHoyos, now 3-1 on the season, struck out six and gave up one walk. Two of the three runs scored by TAMU-Kingsville were unearned, as the Greyhounds committed 4 errors. Three of the errors occurred in the third inning, allowing TAMUK to take a 1-0 lead. ENMU rallied in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Greyhounds sent eight batters to the plate, recorded 7 hits and scored 5 runs. Designated hitter Luz Leal, Jr. (So., Laredo, TX/ Alexander Magnet H.S.) drove in the first two runs with a double down the right field line. The stanza also included RBI singles by Xarin Escobedo (SS/2B, Mexico City, Mexico/El Paso C.C.), Kyle Wagner (Fr., OF, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) and Matt Sulli (Jr., OF, Carlsbad, CA/San Diego Mesa College). Leal singled in the bottom of the fifth to drive in Franco Barrero (So. 1B, Laredo, TX/Laredo J.C.) with another run for ENMU. Escobedo, who batted next, hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Dallas McMann (So., C, Amarillo, TX/Randall H.S.) for a 7-1 lead.

A triple by Adrian Rosales with one out in the top of the sixth, started a 2-run rally by the Javelinas. Brian Berry followed the triple with a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Rosales to score the only earned run off DeHoyos.

Rene Ramirez singled with two outs, reached second an errant pick-off throw, and scored on a single by Armando Huerta. Denzil Davis lined out to left field to end the threat. The Javelinas sent four batters to the plate in the top of the seventh. DeHoyos began the stanza by forcing Higginbotham into a pop fly and David Gonzalez into a fly out. John Dean walked and stole second base, but DeHoyos struck out B.J. Griffith for the final out.

Jeff Zipser (Sr., 2B/SS, Las Vegas, NV/Victor Valley College) was 3 for 3 with a run scored for ENMU. Five other Greyhounds recorded 2 hits during the game, including McMann, who went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored.

Other multiple-hit performances in the second game were earned by Wagner (2 of 4), Sulli (2 for 3), Leal (2-3), and Barrero (2 for 4) TAMUK received one hit each from five players. The triple by Rosales was the only extra- base hit allowed by DeHoyos.

In the opener, the Greyhounds took an early 3-1 lead, but the Javelinas scored once in the fourth inning, six times in the fifth and once in the sixth inning for a 9-3 lead. The Greyhounds chipped away at their 6-run deficit by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth, but TAMUK added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring.

All three of ENMU’s first inning runs were scored with two outs. Zipser received a bases- loaded walk to bring in David Jones (Sr., SS, Sierra Vista, AZ/Eastern Arizona College) with the first run. Leal followed with a base hit up the middle that scored Steven Romano (So., 3B, Las Cruces, NM/Onate H.S.) and Barrero with the final two runs of the inning. The Javelinas’ big fifth inning included 6 hits and one ENMU error.

Berry hit a single up the middle with the bases loaded and two outs to drive in a pair of runs, giving TAMUK a 4-3 lead. Ramirez, Huerta, and Davis each hit an RBI single later in the inning, and Ramirez scored on a throwing error.

Andy Hostetler (Jr., OF, Albuquerque, NM/Valley H.S.) hit a 2-run triple in the sixth inning for ENMU. Chris Stewart (Sr., OF/P, Albuquerque, NM/Manzano H.S.) and Barrero tallied RBI singles during the stanza, as ENMU pulled within 9-7.

TAMUK’s insurance run in the seventh inning completed the scoring. Pitcher Mike Adams improved to 4-1 for the Javelinas. He struck out 7 batters and allowed 3 walks. Tim King, the starter for ENMU, fell to 2-2 with the loss. Cory Barker (Sr., RHP, Kelseyville, CA/Mendicino J.C.) and Rich Thomas (Jr., RHP, Albuquerque, NM/Trinidad J.C.) also pitched for ENMU.

Both teams recorded 11 hits in the opener. TAMU-Kingsville was led by Berry’s 3 for 4 performance and by 2 hits and 2 RBIs in 3 at bats by Rosales. Eastern’s top hitters were Jones, Hostetler and Romano with 2 hits apiece. Leal finished 1 for 1 with 2 RBIs.

Eastern and TAMU-Kingsville will complete the 3-game LSC series with a single 9-inning game on Sunday (Mar. 4). Game time is slated for 12:00 noon (MST).
