RUDY CHARLES NAMED
LSC SOUTH FRESHMAN-OF-THE-YEAR
Also Chosen Honorable Mention All-LSC South
Rudy CharlesPORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University freshman point guard Rudy Charles (5’11”, Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) has been named Lone Star Conference South Division Freshman-of-the-Year as selected by the LSC South head coaches. Charles was also named Honorable Mention All-LSC South for his efforts as ENMU’s floor leader.

Charles averaged a team high 14.9 points per game, scoring a total of 387 points in 26 games for the Greyhounds. He also led the team with 88 assists, an average of 3.4 assists per game. Charles ranked 2nd in the Lone Star Conference in free throw shooting at 81.3% (91 of 112). He also grabbed 108 rebounds (4.2 average), earned 32 steals and converted 32 of 79 three-pointers (40.5%)

He scored a personal-high 25 points in ENMU’s 96-76 victory over Western New Mexico University on Dec. 7, 2000. He earned a double-double with 22 points and 10 assists (season high) in an 83-77 loss to West Texas A&M on Feb. 20, 2001. Charles scored in double figures in 21 of ENMU’s 26 games, including the final 13 games of the season.

Eastern New Mexico finished the 2000-01 season with a 4-22 overall record and a 1-11 record in the LSC South. Head Coach Shawn Scanlan, in his first season at ENMU, began a rebuilding process after ENMU went 3-23 in 1999-00. ENMU ended a 19-game losing streak in the LSC South by winning 67-66 at Abilene Christian on Jan. 18, 2001.

The 2000-01 Greyhounds surpassed last year’s victory total, but have even bigger plans for the future with Charles leading the offense. Charles is quick and versatile — able to drive to the hoop, pass to a teammate or take a 3-point shot. He is a tremendous free throw shooter and works hard on the boards despite his height (5’11”) and his position as the Greyhounds’ point guard.
